CONWAY - Coastal Carolina could not overcome a pair of near three minute second-half scoring droughts along with 11 Gardner-Webb 3-pointers as the Runnin' Bulldogs handed the Chanticleers an 82-67 loss Saturday at The HTC Center.
Gardner-Webb's Jerome Hill, who surpassed 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds in the game, led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 31-point, 10-rebound double-double. Harold McBride poured in a career-high 18, while Adonis Burbage added 16. GWU (12-7, 4-2 Big South) shot an even 50 percent for the game, including an 11-of-24 effort from thee.
Badou Diagne led a quartet of Chanticleers in double-figures with 13 points. Warren Gillis scored 12, while Elijah Wilson and Josh Cameron added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Coastal (14-4, 5-1 Big South) closed the contest making 25-of-58 shots (43.1 percent).
Coastal opened the game making three of its first five attempts from the field with Diagne's 3-pointer at the 16:56 mark putting the Chants up 8-4. GWU's Tyler Strange answered with a three of his own to cut Coastal's lead back to a single point. The teams exchanged the lead 10 times over the next 12 minutes with neither team taking more than a three-point lead.
With the score tied 28-28 and 3:48 showing on the clock, Marcus Freeman scored inside. Hill then committed a turnover on Gardner-Webb's ensuing possession and Wilson capitalized with a 20-foot jumper to give Coastal a four-point lead with 2:39 to go before halftime. Forty seconds later, Freeman got his own rebound on the offensive end and converted the second-chance points to push Coastal to a 34-28 lead. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs would get a trio of 3-pointers, including a banked in shot by McBride as the first half clock expired, during its final three possessions to take a 37-34 lead into the intermission.
The teams traded the first 22 points of the second half, leaving GWU up 48-45 after Gillis' jumper at the 14:21 mark. Coastal then went cold from the field, making just two of its next eight attempts, over the ensuing three minutes as the Runnin' Bulldogs surged out to a 58-49 lead.
Diagne broke Coastal's scoring drought with a bucket inside, but Gardner-Webb countered with a 3-pointer by Strange. The triple sparked a 12-6 run by the visitors that left the Chants trailing 65-63 with just over seven minutes to play.
Gillis made a free throw with 7:21 to remaining and the Chants would not score again until Wilson two free throws with 3:29 to play. During the near four minute scoring drought Gardner-Webb's Hill scored five points to give the Runnin' Bulldogs its largest lead of the game at 70-54.
Coastal got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way as the Runnin' Bulldogs ended Coastal's 14-game home win streak with an 82-67 victory.
The Chanticleers head to UNC Asheville to face the Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan. 22. The game, which is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff, will be carried live on ESPNU.
Gardner-Webb returns home Thursday vs. Longwood at 7:00 p.m.
