Strong Defense Leads to Chants' Third Straight Win

Box Score Jan. 20, 2015

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team, which boasts the Big South's highest scoring offense, had to rely on its defense Tuesday night to pull out a 50-40 win over visiting Campbell at The HTC Center.

The Chanticleers' third consecutive win improves their record to 10-8 overall, 4-5 in the Big South. The loss drops Campbell to 11-7, 6-3.

The Chants' scoring total was the second-lowest of the season, and it was the first game this year that Coastal picked up a win while scoring under 60 points. The defensive effort, however, was one of Coastal's finest of the season, as the 40 points allowed was the lowest against any of the Chants' Division I opponents.

Anna Vogt led all players in scoring, and recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Vogt was also Coastal's most consistent shooter, going 4-9 from the field while making five of nine free throw attempts.

Ced Gibson tallied 12 points on the night and co-led the Chants with two assists. Jas Adams also had two assists, and was Coastal's second-leading rebounder, grabbing a career-high 10 boards. AJ Jordan finished with nine points while playing just 20 minutes after getting into early foul trouble.

Kiera Gaines led Campbell offensively with 12 points, and was the only Camel scorer to reach double figures. Gaines' 10 rebounds to complete the double-double were also a team high.

Coastal started out slow as the offense did not record a point for the opening five minutes, but the defense picked up the slack and held Campbell to just six points during that span. Vogt finally broke the ice for the Chants with a free throw at 14:27, then, as the game started to open up, Jordan went to work, knocking down five straight points to cut into Campbell's lead.

The Chants trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but Vogt and Gibson strung together three straight baskets, and Stephanie Isaacs hit a 3-pointer at 2:15 of the first to bring Coastal within two points. Vogt gave the Chants their first lead of the night on layup with just over a minute left in the first, and Coastal carried a 25-23 lead into the locker room.

Coastal trailed twice in the opening minutes of the second half, but took the lead for good on a jumper from Gibson with 12:26 left in the game. From there, Coastal's stifling defense held Campbell to just two field goals in the game's final 10 minutes, and the Chants ended the night on a 14-4 run. The Camels shot just 25.9 percent from the floor in the second half, and were out-rebounded by the Chants 21-16.

Coastal closed the game shooting 29.8 percent from the field and 76 percent from the line, and out-rebounding Campbell 45-36.

The Chants now take to the road for their next two games, beginning with a 2 p.m. tilt at UNC Asheville this Saturday.
