Longwood Holds Off Coastal's Late Comeback Attempt

Farmville, Va. - For the second consecutive game the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team was able to erase an early-game deficit, but the Chanticleers' (7-6, 1-3) late surge was held off as the Longwood Lancers (2-13, 2-3) claimed a 78-74 victory Monday night at Willett Hall.
The Chants trailed by 12 points or more for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but a Ced Gibson layup kicked off a 26-14 Coastal run in the game's final five minutes. AJ Jordan knocked down five field goals during that span, and, with under 50 seconds remaining, Gibson drained consecutive 3-pointers to cut Longwood's lead to just three points.
After two made free throws from Longwood's Deborah Headen, Jordan again brought the Chants within three points of tying with 18 seconds to go, rolling in a layup from the paint. Just nine second later, Headen made one of two more free throw attempts to put the game out of reach and give Coastal its fourth loss in a row.
Jordan and Gibson were largely responsible for Coastal's late success as the two guards combined for 32 of the Chants' 54 second-half points.
Jordan's 25 total points were a season high, and the senior closed the game shooting 66.7 percent from the field while knocking down all five of her free throws. Gibson finished with 17 points, shooting 70.0 percent from the field and making three treys.
Junior forward Anna Vogt tallied her sixth double-double of the season, and second in as many games, scoring 11 points and leading all players with 15 rebounds. She was also credited with two assists, a block and a steal. Freshman Jas Adams also had 11 points for the Chants.
Longwood was led offensively by the 18 points of Raven Williams, who also dished out a game-high four assists. Treasury Avery and Autumn Childress each grabbed seven rebounds and scored in double-digits for the Lancers, as the former had 12 points and the latter scored 10. Kyndal Skersick was Longwood's second-leading scorer with 13 points.
The Chants improved their field goal shooting from 26.9 percent in the first half to 56.3 percent in the second half, averaging 43.1 percent for the game. That mark was upped by Longwood, who finished the game shooting 44.8 percent from the field. The Lancers also shot well from the free throw line, converting 21 of their 24 attempts. The Chants held a slim advantage on the boards, pulling in 34 rebounds to Longwood's 33.
The two sides were evenly matched to start the game, resulting in a slim 17-16 Longwood lead at the midway point of the first half. Then, with just over five minutes remaining in the opening frame, a Treasure Avery jumper sparked a 15-0 Lancer run to close out the half. The Chants gave the ball away five times during that stretch, and Longwood capitalized by scoring nine points off of those turnovers to take a 39-20 lead into the locker room.
The Lancers claimed the first points of the game 41 seconds in, and held the lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Chants return to The HTC Center on Jan. 8 to kick off a Thursday night doubleheader of Coastal basketball. The Chanticleer women take on the league-leading Liberty Flames at 5 p.m. followed by the men of Coastal and Longwood at 7:30 p.m.
