Opening Statement
"(Monmouth head coach) Kevin Callahan has been there a long time and he is a well-respected coach in the Northeast. He's the guy that built that program. He always does a sound job and they are always well prepared. We did a good job of handling them a year ago, but they had the right guys in the right place. We just had a very good game against them.
"It's (Monmouth's) homecoming, another week at home (for Monmouth) and they are coming off a tremendous upset win over Liberty so I have no doubt that going to be jacked up and ready to go. From a defensive perspective for us, they are number three in the conference in passing. The quarterback is a very good athlete and he gets himself out of trouble. Monmouth's defense did a great job in terms of shutting down the Liberty offense a week ago."
What was the emphasis during the bye week?
"We had three practices, we went after it pretty hard and conditioned after each practice. On offense, defense and special teams, we worked on things we have not seen or prepared for yet this season. Also, we wanted to work on things that teams do well in the coming weeks that we have struggled against. That was our entire emphasis."
What about De'Angelo Henderson and his current touchdown streak?
"There is a consistency. You cannot run your team with the idea that you are going to get a record. But the way our offense is set up, Hop will have his opportunities and we are not going to hesitate to give him the ball anywhere on the field. We are aware that this is an important milestone, but we are certainly not talking about as a staff and I haven't heard our players talking about it. We want to be supportive, but it is secondary as we have to call the game as we see fit."
Is there an issue with your offense since games are closer this year than last or are teams just coming at your harder?
"I don't buy the 'you are number one so teams are preparing different.' I do think teams are doing a better job against us this year than last. Our offense was an elite offense the last part of our first year, all of 2013 and all of last year. This year, we are moving the ball well, but we are hurting ourselves when we have scoring opportunities. we have had numerous opportunities to score once we have gotten inside the 30 yards line, but most of the time we have not because of something stupid we did."
How excited are you guys to be playing close to home?
Sophomore safety Kerron Johnson (Woodbury, N.J.): "I am very excited. This is the first time I've played this close to home since I've been here. A lot of my family members have not had the chance to come down here to see so this is the first time they will get to see me play since high school."
Junior wide receiver Bruce Mapp (Philadelphia, Pa.): "I am excited as well. In high school, I had a big crowd of family wearing t-shirts and carrying signs to support me."
Talk about the practices during the bye week.
Bruce Mapp: "Coach (Dave) Patenaude was on us hard to execute better in the red zone. Most of the practices were focused on executing in the red zone. If we didn't execute, there would be a punishment involved. Obviously you are going to get sick of (doing punishment drills). By Thursday, you could really see us turning it around and Sunday you could see a big turnaround."
Kerron Johnson: "Coach (Clayton) Carlin drilled it into us to have better consistency and focus ... laser focus. When we have been consistently focused, we have been pretty good. It is just those few mental breakdowns that have gone for big plays that have made us look worse than we really are."
