JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Coastal Carolina posted an opening-round 311 at the annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, played at the 7,142-yard and par 72 Blackthorn Club at The Ridges.
Penn State, VCU and Virginia Tech lead the 15-team field after each had an opening-round 1-over par 289.
Alfredo Ruiz leads the Chanticleers after 18 holes. The junior was 4-over par through 11 holes before having birdies on holes 12 and 14. However, he finished with three pars and a bogey on hole 17 for his 3-over par 75 to stand in a tie for 42nd.
Harrison Frye, who only had one bogey on his inward nine, was one shot off the pace of Ruiz, shooting an opening-round 76. The sophomore is tied for 51st.
Rounding out Coastal's scoring was Olle Widegren (79/t-69th), Josh Pisarri (81/t-77th) and Daniel Overas (84/80th).
The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate will continue with 18 holes on Saturday and a final round of 18 holes on Sunday.
