BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team clinched the Big South regular season championship on Thursday evening as the Chanticleers defeated Campbell in four sets at the Fighting Camels' Gore Arena. It is the fifth regular season championship in program history, and first since 2008.
With the win the Chants (21-4) remain undefeated in the Big South as their conference record improves to 13-0 with just one match remaining against second-place High Point. The Panthers are currently 11-2 in the conference and wrapped up the #2 seed with a win Thursday against Charleston Southern.
Saturday's regular season finale, set for 2 p.m. in High Point, N.C., gives Coastal the opportunity to close the regular season with 22 wins and become the first Big South team to go unbeaten in conference play since Winthrop in 2006.
Coastal took the opening set 25-15 before surrendering the second to Camels, 20-25. It was just the second set Coastal has lost against a conference opponent this season, and first since defeating High Point 3-1 on Oct. 2. The Chants bounced back to take the third 25-16, and sealed the match by a 25-19 margin in the fourth.
Leah Hardeman led the match with 16 kills and completed the double-double, her 10th of the season, with 11 digs. Hardeman also finished with three blocks, including one solo and two assists, to finish with a match-leading 18.0 points.
Annayka Legros joined Hardeman in double figure kills with 12 while posting a match-high .450 hitting percentage. Legros also finished with three blocks, all assists.
Lian Bernett led a trio of Chants to finish with double figure digs as the senior led all players with 18, followed by the 14 of Alexis Flynn and 11 of Hardeman.
Sara Boothe recorded a match-high of 35 assists, surpassing the 30 assist mark for the third straight match and ninth time this season.
The Chants led the match in every statistical category except for blocks, where the Camels finished with nine to Coastal's eight. Eszter Nagy led Coastal's blocking efforts with four on one solo and three assists.
Campell claimed the first three points of the opening set and held a 9-8 lead until consecutive attack erros from Katelyn Layden gave Coastal a one-point lead. The Chants held that lead for the remainder of the set behind a .258 hitting percentage while Campbell was held to hitting .000.
Coastal jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the second before allowing the Camels to go on a 12-7 run to tie the game at 18 apiece. From there the Chants managed just two more points as the Camels claimed the set by a five point margin.
The Chants rebounded in the third and fourth set, hitting .387 and .172, respectively. Hardeman put down a combined 11 kills in the final sets while also accounting for four digs and a block. The last two games featured just five lead changes as the Chants gained control early and managed to grind out wins to close the match.
Coastal will enter the Big South tournament on Nov. 19 as the top seeded team. With the top eight teams earning a seed in the tournament, the Chants would currently face #8 Charleston Southern which holds a 4-8 conference record.
