CONWAY - After dropping a 13-3 decision the previous day to Coastal Carolina, Canisius (2-2) rallied to post a 14-3 decision versus the Chanticleers (2-2) Tuesday afternoon, scoring five runs in the fourth inning and six in the sixth en route to the comfortable win in the final game of the seventh annual Caravelle Resort Tournament at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Jack Massa was 4-for-6 with three RBI, while Ryan Stekl contributed three hits and three RBI. Alex Godzak (1-0) earned the win, allowing four hits and two runs over 5.1 innings.
The Griffins exploded for five runs in the fourth, taking advantage of two Chanticleer errors. Jesse Puscheck and Connor Panas started the frame with back-to-back singles. Stekl reached on an error, allowing Puscheck to score. With one out, Massa and Adam Tricarico delivered consecutive RBI doubles. A second CCU error put runners on the corners and allowed Massa to score. Jake Lumley capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single.
Canisius pushed its advantage to 11-0 by sending 12 men to the plate in the sixth inning. Massa singled and took second on a wild pitch. Tricarico followed with an RBI single each singled. Lumley and Massicci walked to load the bases. Puscheck made it three consecutive walks, forcing in a run. Stekl and Brett Siddall were each hit by pitches for force in two more runs. Massa followed with his second hit of the inning, bringing home two runners on the play.
Coastal Carolina got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Anthony Marks walked, Zach Remillard singled and Connor Owings hit a three-run home run down the right field line, his second round-tripper of the season.
Canisius got two of those runs back in the top of the seventh to make the score 13-3. Lumley singled, moved to second on CCU error, advanced to third on a bunt single by Massicci and scored on an RBI ground out by Panas. Panas later scored on an RBI single from Siddall.
Thanks to the fifth Chanticleer error of the game, Puscheck started the ninth by reaching first. A wild pitch and a pair of ground outs allowed Puscheck to score and provide the final score of 14-3.
In addition to the five errors, seven Coastal Carolina pitchers combined to walk four Griffins while hitting three others, five of the free passes coming in the six-run sixth inning. Freshman Shave Sawczak (0-1) suffered the loss in his collegiate debut, allowing five this and three runs (two earned) in 3.1 innings. He did walk a batter and struck out three, including each of his first two batters faced.
Coastal Carolina will return to action this weekend to host the 16th annual Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach. The field includes nationally-ranked Florida International and NCAA Regional favorites Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and Albany.
