Buies Creek, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team clawed back from a 23-point deficit in the second half of Tuesday night's game at Campbell to trail by just five in the final minutes of play, but the Chanticleers (12-16, 6-13) could not complete the comeback as the Fighting Camels (18-10, 13-6) hung on to claim the 78-69 victory.
AJ Jordan led the Chants' offensive efforts in the comeback attempt, totaling 18 points on 9-17 from the floor while grabbing five rebounds. Ced Gibson scored 16 points of her own, and assisted on 12 others as Coastal's point guard dished out six helpers to lead all players. Anna Vogt rebounded from a scoreless first half to finish with 14 points on 5-8 from the floor and 4-5 from the line.
Campbell had four of its starters score in double figures, and was led by the 19 points of Kiera Gaines. Amanda Coffer and Summer Leverette followed with 17 points apiece, while RaeChaun Edwards rounded out the foursome with 12 points. Gaines also led the Camels with 15 rebounds to complete the double-double, and was five assists shy of a triple-double.
A fast-paced start to the game saw the Chants call their first timeout after Campbell jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the opening minute-and-a-half. The game snowballed from there as Vogt picked up two fouls in the next three minutes and was kept from the floor for the remainder of the half. Without their leading inside scorer, the Chants relied on guards Jordan, Gibson and Jas Adams to shoulder the workload. The trio responded by scoring 26 of Coastal's 28 points in the first half.
The Chants trailed by just four at the 5-minute mark of the first, but Campbell closed out the half on a 17-4 run that put the Camels in front 45-28 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
Vogt returned to lineup for the Chants to start the second half and made an immediate impact, scoring the team's first basket and leading Coastal in the period with 14 points.
Campbell led by as many as 23 points in the second half, but the Chants continued to battle, clamping down on defense and stringing together small scoring streaks to chip away at the deficit. Vogt hit two free throws at the 14-minute mark to kick off a 7-0 Coastal run that saw another free throw from Adams and two layups courtesy of Jordan and Vogt. Then, trailing by 12, Coastal put up five straight points to cut Campbell's lead to single-digits with just over seven minutes remaining.
The Camels' lead remained at nine until, with 3:50 to go, an Adams free throw was followed by a clutch 3-pointer from Stephanie Isaacs, her first in three games, to bring the Chants within five. Coastal could not pull any closer, however, as Campbell hit 10 of its final 12 free throw attempts in the last minute of play to close out the win.
Coastal's 45.2 field goal percentage was topped by the 47.6 percent of Campbell, and the Fighting Camels also won the rebounding battle 39-36. The game featured 39 total turnovers, 21 of which came from the black-clad Chanticleers.
Coastal returns to The HTC Center on Saturday to host UNC Asheville for its final regular season game before the Big South Basketball Championships. The Chants and Bulldogs tip at 2 p.m., and after the game Coastal will honor its lone senior student-athlete, AJ Jordan.
