Blacksburg, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team concluded its weekend trip to Virginia Tech with a 6-1 loss to the 50th-ranked Hokies on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows Burleson Tennis Center.

The Chanticleers fall to 1-3 on the season with the loss, while the win improves Virginia Tech to 5-1 overall.

The match began with Virginia Tech sweeping on the doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead.

Caroline Daxhelet and Kelly Williford struck first with a 6-2 win over Sara Bondar and Honami Yazawa at No. 2. The opening point was then clinched on the first court, where Libby Scott and Romane Delay fell 6-3 to Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita. The final doubles match was decided 6-4 in favor of the Virginia Tech pair of Katherine Butler and Mariana Silva.

The Hokies quickly clinched the match in singles as Fusinato, Stoica and Butler defeated Yazawa, Scott and Bondar, respectively, in straight sets to go ahead 4-0.

The Chants' lone point of the match came on the third singles court, where Delay ended the day with a three set victory over Elena Cerezo-Codina, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

"Our scores might not reflect it, but we definitely got better this weekend," said head coach Catherine Hewitt in reference to the tough opposition the Chants faced in Old Dominion and Virginia Tech. "Having the opportunity to play against two high caliber teams made us take it to a higher level."

The Chanticleers are idle for a week before returning to the court on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they head to Greenville, N.C. to take on East Carolina for a noon match.
