PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - Ben Wheeler and Andrew Dorn each carded a final round, 1-under par 71 Sunday and Coastal Carolina moved up two spots to finish 12th (312-314-297=923) at the annual John Hayt Invitational, played at the par 72, 6,976-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Wheeler moved up 11 spots to tie for 10th, marking his third top 10 finish this season and the 12th of his career. The senior was 21st after the first two rounds, shooting 76-74, and thans to his 71 Sunday finished with a -over par score of 221. Wheeler started his final round with a bogey on the par 4 10th hole. He got back to even with a birdie on the par 3 15th. However, a bogey on the 17th hole led to a 2-over par 38 after nine holes. Wheeler finished strong with birdies on three of his last four holes to secure his 35th career round of par or better.
Dorn was 15th after an opening round 75, but dropped to 33rd with a second round score of 77. Like Wheeler, Dorn rocketed up the leaderboard with his final round 71 as he climbed 12 spots into a te for 21st with a 54-hole score of 223.This also marked Dorn's 35th career round of par of better.
The 15-team field featured eight teams ranked among the nation's top 41. Texas, ranked eighth, held its second-round lead to win the team title with a 4-hole score of 872 (301-280-291). North Florida, ranked 29th, finished second (878), followed by @26 Oklahoma State, #16 UCLA, #18 Alabama and #40 UAB. Other ranked teams included #41 Louisville, which finished 10th, and #31 East Carolina, which placed 15th.
Rounding out Coastal's contingent were Alfredo Ruiz (76-80-78=234/62nd-tie), Josh Pisarri (86-83-77=246/81st) and Harrison Frye (8-84-78=247/82nd-tie). Olle Widegren played as an individual and tied for 7th (81-81-79=241).
Coastal Carolina will return to action Mar. 10-11 by hosting the annual Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday General Hackler Championship at The Dunes Club. The field includes Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Cincinnati, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Iowa State, Jacksonville, Kent State, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina State, North Florida, North Texas, USC Upstate and Winthrop.
