MYRTLE BEACH - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track programs find themselves in a good position after day one of the Coastal Carolina University Invitational being held at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Fourteen Chanticleer student-athletes finished in the top 10 of their respective competitions, including 11 field athletes and three track athletes.
Ryan Minor, who swept the hammer, discus and shot put in last weekend's Battle of the Beaches, turned in another good performance as he finished second in the hammer throw with a distance of 56.52 meters (185'5"). Minor's mark in Friday's competition was tops among collegiate competitors and traveled five inches further than his best throw last weekend. However, it wasn't enough to surpass Andy Fryman's throw of 68.60 meters (225'1"), only 3.40 meters shy of Doug Shaw Stadium's all-time record. Freshman Bryan Zapata placed eighth in the event with a throw of 49.96 meters (163'11").
Robert Castellani, who also took home the title in last weekend's javelin, placed eighth in today's event after posting a throw of 55.17 meters (181'0"). Fellow javelin competitors Chloe White, competing in her first meet as a Chanticleer, and Tiffani Kuhn placed fifth and seventh in the women's competition with throws of 42.52 (139'6") meters and 39.32 meters (129'0"), respectively.
Additionally, Emma Kroger and Brianna Cristiano placed second and tied for seventh in the women's pole vault with marks of 3.50 meters (11'5.75") and 3.05 meters (10'0"), respectively, while the Chants turned in their best collective performance in the men's long jump, where three competitors placed in the top six. Raheen Frederick finished second with a mark of 7.12 meters (23'4.50" - first among collegiate competitors), Mark Stembridge placed fourth with a 6.75-meter (22'1.75") jump and Marquez Moore came in sixth after jumping 6.70 meters (21'11.75") On the women's side, Kelila Naules placed ninth after posting a mark of 5.53 meters (18'1.75").
Coastal Carolina wrapped up Friday's events with Rachel Byrd placing first among collegiate participants and second overall in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:34.58, while Joseph Keitt and Evan Niciphor turned in times of 15:04.92 and 15:38.68 to finish third and seventh, respectively, in the men's competition.
Tomorrow's field events will being with the men's discus throw at 9 a.m. and will be followed by the women's 3,000-meter run starting off the track events at 9:30 a.m.
