CONWAY - 15 seniors were honored at the annual Coastal Carolina track & field banquet held in the Adkins Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.
2016 was a wildly successful year for the Chants, as multiple athletes set new personal bests, scored first-place finishes and snapped CCU school records. Coastal's seniors led the way, providing veteran leadership and exemplifying sportsmanship and positive values.
During Sunday's banquet, seniors Kelila Naules, Teka Simpson, Veneshia Holmes, Regina Peattie, Jalacy Green, Raven Hamilton, Jackie Brengel, Brianna Cristiano, Deion Wellington, Amirah Al-Bayyinah, Desmond Wallace, Ryan Minor, Zach Hensel, Gabe Gittens and Brinson Corn were recognized for their accomplishments, both academically and athletically.
Naules, a sprints and jumps star, is graduating this summer with a degree in public health. She won a Big South Championship in 2014 in the 4x100m relay, and is a three-time All-Big South member in the triple jump, long jump and 4x100m.
Simpson, who graduates this spring with a degree in exercise and sport science, is CCU's school record holder in the 4x100m (44.48) and 4x400m (3:34.02). She is a 20-time All-Big South honoree in the 60m, 100m, 200m, long jump, high jump, 4x100m and 4x400m, as well as a nine-time Big South champion in the long jump, high jump, 4x100m and 4x400m.
Holmes, a standout jumps specialist, graduates with a degree in management in the fall. She competed in the Big South conference meet both indoor and outdoor all four years, and scored at the 2016 indoor conference meet.
Peattie, who graduates this spring with a degree in recreation sports management, proved time and time again that endurance is not a weakness, as she had a breakout year in distance events. In 2015, she was All-Big South as part of a distance medley.
Green graduates this spring with a degree in public health. She ranks fourth in CCU history in the shot put, as she set a personal best mark of 13.88m (45-06.50) during the 2015 indoor season.
Hamilton, who graduates with a degree in exercise and sports science this spring, has been a dominating force in jumps. She currently ranks seventh all-time indoor in the high jump and ninth all-time outdoors in the high jump at Coastal.
Brengel is a distance standout who graduates with a double major in exercise and sports science and public health in the Spring 2017. She recorded two of the Chanticleers' top-four 3,000m steeplechase times.
Cristiano, who graduates with a degree in exercise and sports science this spring, excelled in the pole vault. A member of the 2013-14 Big South Presidential Honor Roll, she competed in the Big South championship all four years of her career at Coastal.
Wellington graduates this summer with a degree in exercise and sports science. He holds the school record in the 4x200 relay at 1:24.34, and is currently ranked third in the Big South with a personal record of 48.06 in the 400m.
Al-Bayyinah graduates this summer with a degree in marketing. She ranks No. 2 all-time in the triple jump at Coastal, was an NCAA East Preliminary Round qualifier in the triple jump (outdoor), a Big South champion in the triple jump and long jump (indoor) and was named Big South's Most Outstanding Field Athlete (indoor).
Minor graduates this fall with a degree in Middle Level Education. He ranks fifth all-time in the hammer at Coastal, and was named All-Big South in the event.
Wallace graduates in May with a degree in Business. He holds the school record in the 4x200 relay at 1:24.34, and is currently tied for 10th in the nation with a personal record and school record of 13.68 in the 110H.
Gittens is graduating with a management degree this summer. The sprints star set a personal-best in the 400m dash at the Big South Conference Championships with a time of 50.80 seconds.
Hensel, a standout in distance events, graduates this summer with a degree in exercise and sports science. In 2013, he helped the Chants to their highest finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional since 2009.
Corn, who graduates this spring with a degree in hospitality, resort and tourist, was named 2016 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He is tied for the indoor overall pole vault record at Coastal.
The Chants are back in action May 10-12 at the Big South Outdoor Championships in Lynchburg, Va.
