MYRTLE BEACH - The Coastal Carolina women's track program capped off this weekend's Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational by taking home the Mayor's Relay Cup as they finished tied with Clemson for the best collective performance on Saturday afternoon at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
After registering two third-place finishes in yesterday's 4x800 and 4x200 meter relays, the Chanticleer women finished fifth and first in today's 4x100 and 4x400 meter races, good for 26 overall points and tied for a team title. The 4x100 meter team of Kelila Naules, Teka Simpson, Stephanie Taylor-Pollock and Symphony Thompson ran a 46.49-second race, while the 400-meter foursome of Camille Hurley, Christal Green, Jessica Gelibert and Simpson ran a 3:39.90 race.
Saturday proved to be the most competitive day of the event as the top-10 finishers in the majority of the day's heats were separated by only seconds, if not less. All in all, Coastal placed 27 student-athletes and relay teams in the top 10, including an individual title and team relay title.
The Chanticleers placed the top two finishers in the women's one mile run as Aynslee van Graan and Letitia Saayman finished first and second with times of 4:55.51 and 4:55.89, respectively. Additionally, Gelibert and Hurley, who qualified for the finals in the women's 100-meter hurdles in yesterday's preliminaries, finished second and third with times of 13.82 and 13.94, respectively. Hurley's time was good enough for a new personal best while Gelibert finished just 0.07 seconds shy of her best mark.
On the men's side, freshman sprinter Therius Styles, who was the top qualifier in the men's 100-meter dash yesterday, finished fifth in today's race with a time of 10.75 seconds. Styles also ran in the men's 200-meter dash and finished fourth with a time of 21.49 seconds. Fellow freshman Kahlim Denmark finished ninth, only 0.38 seconds behind Styles.
Senior jumper Reggie Nelson matched his season-best with a 2.13-meter mark (6'11.75") in the men's high jump and finished third. Also, senior distance runner Joseph Keitt recorded the second-fastest outdoor mile time in CCU history and finished sixth with a 4:15.24 pace. Lastly, Coastal placed two hurdlers in the top-10 of the men's 400-meter race as Jerome Coaxum Jr. and Carrington Fernandors finished third and ninth with times of 53.55 seconds and 54.72 seconds, respectively. Coaxum's time was more than 1.30 seconds faster than any Chanticleer this season.
