KENNESAW, Ga. - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team extended its current program-best winning streak to four games by defeating Kennesaw State 18-3 on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
For the Chanticleers, it was arguably their best all-around performance of the season as they led from start to finish and outshot the Owls 33-11. Additionally, Coastal matched a season-high as 11 different players found the back of the net.
The team jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 13:19 of the game before the Owls were able to get on the board with Lucy Mills' goal at the midway point of the first half. Coastal was able to extend its lead to 11-1 at the 6:21 mark, but Mills found the back of the net two more times before halftime to cut the lead to 11-3 and avoid a running clock.
The second half started much like the first as Coastal maintained possession for much of the final 30:00 and outscored Kennesaw State 7-0. During its current four-game winning streak, the Chanticleers have outscored its opponents 28-6 in the second half.
Offensively, the Chants were led by junior midfielder Kasey Griese, who recorded her second career four-goal game, both coming against Kennesaw State. Griese also added an assist to go along with a ground ball, draw control and caused turnover in the game. Sophomore midfielder Alicia Geiter continued to play well offensively as she recorded her second consecutive hat trick and has now scored nine goals in the team's last four games. Senior attack Jen Cosgrove scored her team-leading 19th goal of the season on Saturday and has now scored in all eight of Coastal's games this season.
Defensively, Coastal recorded a season-high 26 ground balls and improved upon its 18.17 average. Junior goalkeeper Trista Kuehn saw her first action of the season in the second half of Sunday's action and pitched a shutout while also recording three saves and two ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Stover made her eighth straight start in net for the Chants and earned the win.
With the win, Coastal improved to 5-3 on the season while Kennesaw State fell to 3-7. It marks the Chanticleers' third victory over the Owls in as many games, with the Chants holding a 58-22 goals scored advantage.
Coastal will have an extended period of time off before beginning Big South Conference play with a game at Longwood University on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. The Chants are 0-2 all-time against the Lancers.
