CONWAY - Nine Chanticleer batters combined for 15 hits while Austin Kerr and Bobby Holmes combined for the Chants' third shutout of the season in a 6-0 victory Saturday afternoon versus Winthrop at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Coastal Carolina, winners of 11 straight, improve to 20-6 overall and 5-0 in the Big South Conference, while Winthrop drops to 17-10, 1-4. Prior to the game, several dignitaries were on hand as Coastal Carolina University held a formal dedication ceremony for both the baseball and softball complex.
Anthony Marks paced the Chanticleer offensive attack with three infield singles, while Michael Paez, Connor Owings, Zach Remillard and Tyler Chadwick each contributed two hits.
On the mound, Kerr (5-0) set the tone early by striking out four of the first five batters he faced. He only faced four batters over the minimum in his 6.2 innings as the Eagles managed just three hits and Kerr walked one. Despite two batters reaching on errors, Coastal turned a double play and a Winthrop runner was caught stealing to limit the plate appearances.
Bobby Holmes closed out the game by retiring seven of the 10 batters he faced. The freshman had a streak of 14 consecutive batters retired after hitting a batter in the eighth inning. Holmes would allow a single and a walk in the ninth inning. He struck out the first batter he faced - which ended the seventh inning - and struck out the last batter he faced - which ended the game.
Coastal broke the deadlock with a run in the third. Paez reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI triple by Owings.
In the fourth, David Parrett, Chadwick and Molina had consecutive hits, the last being an RBI single to left field, to give the Chants a 2-0 lead.
Coastal added a run in the fifth. Paez hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a bunt single by Owings. G.K. Young followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Paez for a 3-0 CCU lead.
Chadwick gave the Chants a 4-0 lead with a leadoff home run to start the sixth inning.
Coastal capped the scoring with two run in the eighth. Chadwick was hit by a pitch before Josh Crump and Marks laid down consecutive bunt singles to load the bases. Paez hit a seeing-eye single back up the middle to drive in both Chadwick and Crump to provide the 6-0 final.
Roger Gonzalez had two of Winthrop's four hits. Josh Strong (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings.
Coastal Carolina and Winthrop will conclude their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch at Springs Brooks Stadium is set for 2 pm.
