PONTE VERDE BEACH, Fla. - Led by junior Lena Schaeffner's 3-under 141, Coastal Carolina women's golf is seventh after two rounds of play at the Web.com Intercollegiate contested at the par-72, 5,967-yard Marsh Landing Country Club in Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.
The Chanticleers finished the first 36 holes of the 54-hole event 16-over par (295-297=592), but are just 10 strokes back of fifth-place Illinois (582). Miami, the No. 32 team in the nation according to the latest Golfstat rankings, leads the 17-team field with a 13-under par score of 563 (281-282).
Coastal's Schaeffner fired a 1-over 73 with the help of 15 pars and a birdie her first time around the course. She then equaled her career-low round with a 4-under 68 on her second round. She played the front nine of her second round 4-under, before recording a bogey on 10. She then got back to 4-under with a birdie on 17. The 4-under 68 moved her 24 slots up the individual leaderboard into a tie for fourth with South Florida's Ashley Burke.
Schaeffner's 68 marked the third time this season and fourth in her three-year career that she recorded the 4-under score. Overall, Schaeffner has turned in 14 par or better rounds in her 28 competitive round this season.
Freshman Malene Krolboll Hansen is tied for 32nd on the individual leaderboard with a 3-over 147. Hansen opened the event with an even-par 72, then shot a 3-over 75 her second time around the track. Hansen totaled five birdies on the day, including three on the front nine of her first 18 holes.
Tied for 54th overall is senior Frida Castillo. She carded rounds of 75 and 76 for a 7-over 151 total. She turned in 12-par, two-birdie first round and 12-par, three-birdie second round.
Bailey Cocca and Emee Herbert are tied for 71st on the individual leaderboard with 10-over 154 totals. Cocca opened the event with a 75, but then shot a 79 her second time around the course. Herbert used rounds of 76 and 78 en route to her 154 total. She carded two birdies and 23 pars throughout the day.
Marissa Hinchman, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 77th overall with rounds of 72 and 84 for a 12-over 156 total.
The Chants tee off on the final round of the tournament Tuesday morning.
