Chants Down UNC Wilmington 5-2

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team evened its season record at 4-4 on Wednesday afternoon with a 5-2 win over visiting non-conference foe UNC Wilmington (2-5) at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
"All of our student-athletes stepped up at different times and played a key role in our success today," said Chanticleer head coach Catherine Hewitt. "Wilmington is always a very disciplined team and I thought we did a great job of executing our game plan."
Coastal jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with wins on the first and third courts. Wilmington struck first with an 8-3 win at No. 2, but Natalie Wall and Cari Berry evened the point at No. 3 with an 8-5 victory over Alix Theodossiou and Christin Kaupper.
Libby Scott and Honami Yazawa sealed the opening point for the Chants at No. 1 by virtue of an 8-7 tiebreaker over Annika Silanpaa and Christine Kharkevitch.
The Chants then furthered their lead to 3-0 as Scott and Sara Bondar claimed the first two singles points. Ritchie's defeat of Yazawa at No. 1 gave the Seahawks their first point of the day, but Wall closed the match in three sets at No. 4.
Berry earned the Chants' fifth point on the sixth singles court to close out the match.
Coastal dips briefly back into Big South Conference play on Saturday as the Chants host Gardner-Webb for a 1 p.m. match at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
