Chanticleers Win Big South Challenge Cup

The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track programs took home team titles in the Big South Challenge Cup hosted by Campbell University at the Irwin Belk Track and Clarence E. Roberts Field Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The men's team totaled 176 points after winning seven individual events and team relay, while the women's program tallied 218 points with eight individual wins as well as finishing first in a relay.

A week after tying the Coastal Carolina record in the men's 200-meter dash, senior sprinter Alexander Hass had yet another impressive performance as he not only won the men's 100-meter dash, but also set the school record in the event with a time of 10.52 seconds.

Freshman sprinter Jerome Coaxum, Jr. notched his first individual win in his young career as a Chanticleer by winning the men's 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 49.39 seconds. Steve Carr finished just behind Coaxum as he took second place with a time of 50.11 seconds.

Senior hurdler Carrington Fernandors won his first event of the season after posting a time of 14.83 seconds into a head wind in the men's 110-meter hurdles.

Senior jumper Reggie Nelson and last week's Big South Men's Field Athlete of the Week backed up his recognition by winning the men's long jump with a mark of 7.24 meters (23'9"), good for a new personal best.

Other notable performances on the men's side included a first-place finish from freshman Robert Castellani with a throw of 59. 60 meters (195'6") in the javelin, his second-best throw of the season.

Senior runner Joseph Keitt finished second in the men's 1500-meter race with a new personal-best time of 3:52.07, improving upon his already sixth-best time in program history.

Additionally, junior Ryan Minor and freshman Zach Bolton finished first and second in the men's shot put with throws of 15.04 meters (49'4.25") and 14.87 meters (48'9.50"). Bolton's mark was good for a new personal-best in his young career. Minor also won the hammer throw with a distance of 54.98 meters (180'4").

The 4x400-meter relay team of Carr, Coaxum, Kahlim Denmark and Nick Seabright won the event with a time of 3:21.03.

On the women's side, sprinters Camille Hurley and Symphony Thompson placed first and second in the 200-meter dash with times of 24.70 second and 24.94 seconds, respectively. Hurley's time was good for a new personal best.

After setting the school record in the women's 100-meter hurdles at last weekend's Bill Carson Invitational, Jessica Gelibert won the event on Saturday with a time of 13.76 seconds. Finishing right behind her in second place was Hurley with a time 13.87 seconds.

A pair of Chanticleers in Christina Davis and Olivia Coopwood also finished first and second in the 400-meter hurdles with times of 1:01.04 and 1:02.51, respectively.

Gelibert also finished first in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 54.52 seconds, good for a new personal best and the third fastest time in school history. It was her first time competing in the event this season. Running-mate Christal Green finished in second place after running a 56.89-second race.

Aynslee van Graan and Letitia Saayman also finished first and second in the women's 1500-meter race with times of 4:29.96 and 4:37.08, respectively. Saayman's time was enough for a new personal best, while van Graan came up just a few seconds short. Additionally, van Graan won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:14.75 and Saayman won the 3000-meter race for the second time this season with a time of 9:51.82.

Furthermore, junior Teka Simpson won the women's long jump with a season-best jump of 5.63 meters (18'5.75").

Cari Pallini finished second in both the women's hammer throw and discus with a pair of new personal-best distances of 41.02 meters (134'7") and 41.15 meters (135'0"), respectively. The sophomore thrower also competed in the shot put for the first time this season and finished second with a mark of 11.35 meters (37'3").

Lastly, the 4x400-meter relay team of Green, Imani Boatwright, Davis and Coopwood won the event after running a race of 3:46.52.

Coastal Carolina will continue its season with the Penn Relays from Thursday, April 23 to Saturday, April 25 in Philadelphia, Pa.
