CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina junior Lena Schaeffner has been selected as the Choice Hotels Big South Women's Golfer of the Week and senior Andrew Dorn is the Choice Hotels Big South Men's Golfer of the Week for events played March 26-April 1, it was announced today by the league office.
Schaeffner, who is ranked as the 51st-best collegian by Golfstat, tied for fifth in the 96-competitor field at the Web.com Intercollegiate (par 72, 5,967 yards) with a 3-under par 213 (73-68-72) to lead Coastal to a sixth-place team finish. The top-five showing marked her fifth of the season and seventh top-10 finish of 2014-15. This season Schaeffner has recorded three rounds in the 60's, while turning in a par or better score in 15 of her 29 competitive rounds. Her current 72.48 scoring average ranks best in the Big South by more than a stroke, while ranking as the top single-season scoring average in Coastal Carolina history.
The Golfer of the Week honor was Schaeffner's third consecutive and sixth of the season. Overall, she has earned nine career conference Golfer of the Week honors.
Dorn captured co-medalist honors at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (par 72, 7,364 yards), as he finished in a three-way tie for first with a career-low 11-under par 205 (67-69-69), which also ties for the sixth-best 54-hole score in program history. He had a bogey-free round on the first day, and now has five career top five finishes, 11 career rounds in the 60s and 39 career rounds of par or better.
Dorn was also co-medalist at the 2014 General Hackler Championship, sharing the title with Kent State's Corey Connors as both carded a 54-hole score of even par 216. (It was predetermined that no playoff would be contested at the 2014 Hackler.)
It marked the first time Dorn has shot three rounds in the 60's at an event and just the second time he had three rounds under par at an event, shooting 71-69-69 at the (fall) 2013 ETSU Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges.
