CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team earned its fifth NCAA Regional bid in the past seven years on Monday, as the Chanticleers were selected to the NCAA East Regional. The team watched NCAA Selection Show live on the Golf Channel in the LeForce Hospitality Suite prior to joining their fellow student-athletes for the Student-Athlete Excellence Awards on the court at The HTC Center.
The East Regional, hosted by NC State, will be played May 7-9 at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.
"I am really proud of the ladies and their level of play this season," said Coastal Carolina head coach Katie Quinney. "Getting back to the NCAA Regionals after missing it as a team last season has been a goal of ours and now we need to put all our efforts towards returning to the National Championship."
This marks the sixth NCAA Regional appearance for the Chanticleers, who also earned a bids in 2005, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013. Of Coastal's six NCAA Regional selections five, including this year's, have been by virtue of an automatic bid by winning the Big South Conference championship.
The NCAA East Regional field will feature some of the toughest competition of all the three sites, which includes top-seeded South Carolina and regional rivals Furman, Campbell and College of Charleston.
"This is a deep field, making this regional site very difficult, but we have competed well against the majority of the teams," Quinney added. "We are the 13th seed, but I believe our ability and potential at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course gives us a great chance for enough upsets to advance."
The low six teams and low three individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 22-27 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. Hosted by USF, the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships will feature teams and student-athletes - who advanced from NCAA Regional Qualifying - competing in an individual stroke-play format over 72 holes with the top eight teams qualifying at the conclusion of play for the team match-play tournament.
"I believe that if we stay focused and relaxed, our best games will come through," Quinney said. "This team has shown more than enough capabilities on very difficult golf courses with tough fields to know they have the talent to finish in the top six and advance to the National Championship."
