HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track and field programs finished second in the Big South Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon at High Point's Vert Stadium. Both teams fell short of Liberty University, as the men totaled 182.5 points to Liberty's 288.5 points, while the women's 199 points came up just short of the Flames' 210.5 points.
A trio of Chanticleer relay teams claimed conference championships on Saturday as the men's 4x100 and 4x400 and women's 4x400 teams each took home the Big South crown. The men's quartet of Kahlim Denmark, Alexander Hass, DeAndra Lipscomb and Theirus Styles ran a season-best time and set the stadium record with a time of 40.26 seconds en route to the 4x100 championship, Coastal Carolina's fourth consecutive win in the event. Later, Jerome Coaxum Jr., Hass, Steve Carr and Lipscomb teamed up to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:12.53. For the women, the foursome of Christal Green, Camille Hurley, Teka Simpson and Jessica Gelibert set the stadium and meet record in the 4x400 relay with a time 3:38.66.
Letitia Saayman won her second Big South Championship of the weekend, this one in the 5,000-meter run, with a season and personal-best time of 16:51.56. She set the stadium and meet record in the event. Fellow distance runner Aynslee van Graan earned All-Big South honors in the women's 1500-meter run with a third-place finish and a time of 4:30.
Desmond Wallace and Carrington Fernandors each earned All-Big South honors after finishing first and second in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Wallace set the stadium and Coastal Carolina record with a race of 13.80 seconds, besting the previous school record held by Jack Hutchinson by 0.27 seconds. Fernandors also made the podium in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.50 seconds, good for third place. He set personal-best times in both events.
On the women's side, Jessica Gelibert and Camille Hurley also earned All-Big South honors with second and third-place finishes. Gelibert bested her school record set earlier this season with a time of 13.39 seconds, while Camille Hurley also set a personal-best with a time of 13.69 seconds.
Gelibert later won her third consecutive 400-meter hurdles championship with a time of 58.15 seconds. Running mate Christina Davis joined Gelibert on the podium with a third-place finish and a personal-best time of 59.01 seconds.
Hass, Lipscomb and Carr finished second through fourth, respectively, in the men's 400-meter dash with times of 48.04 seconds, 48.29 seconds and 49.03 seconds. For the women, Hurley finished second in the event with a time of 54.40 seconds, good for a new personal best.
Later, Hass won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.53 seconds and was joined on the podium by Denmark, who finished third with a time of 21.75 seconds.
Denmark, along with Styles, also earned conference honors in the men's 100-meter dash after finishing second and third with times of 10.47 seconds and 10.59 seconds, respectively. If not for the wind aid restrictions, Demark's time would have set a new school record. Symphony Thompson also earned conference honors in the women's event with a season-best time of 11.86 seconds and a second-place finish.
Imani Boatwright and Aynslee van Graan finished second and third in the 800-meter run with times of 2:13.44 and 2:14.94, respectively.
The field events began the day, and Coastal Carolina's Ryan Minor finished second in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 56.33 meters (184-09), earning All-Big South honors.
Later, Derrick Kinloch, Jr. finished fourth in the men's triple jump with a distance of 15.11 meters (49-07). He also would have broken former Chanticleer Chad Phillips' school-record jump of 14.99 meters (49-02.25) in 2010 if not for the excessive wind aid.
Although both programs ultimately fell short, a total of 43 all-conferece honors were awarded to Chanticleer student-athletes. The programs also won a combined 11 championships throughout the three-day event. Lastly, Hass and Kyla van Graan were each named to their respective Big South All-Academic teams.Â
