2014-15 Coastal Carolina Season Stats / Record Book Update
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina University junior Lena Schaeffner will compete at the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships beginning Friday, May 22, at the par 72, 6,468 yard The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Schaeffner will join 24 teams and 11 other individuals at the Championships. All 24 teams and 12 individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play, and then the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the championship.
Schaeffner tied for second with a 2-under 214 score at the NCAA Raleigh Regional two weeks ago to earn a spot at the National Championship, becoming the first Chanticleer to compete at nationals since the Coastal Carolina team qualified in 2011. The 2015 Big South Women's Golfer of the Year, she is currently ranked 31st nationally. She leads Coastal Carolina and the Big South with a 72.44 scoring average over 34 rounds of competition, currently the best single season scoring average in Chanticleer women's golf history.
In addition to her superb scoring average this season, the Rettigheim, Germany, native has also set the Coastal record with three event wins in a single season. She captured her first tournament title in October at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, then won the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate in March before capturing the individual crown at the Big South Championship in April.
Schaeffner has led the Chanticleers to a current 47th-place national ranking and the 2015 league championship and NCAA regionals appearance. Schaeffner, who was named the 2014-15 Coastal Carolina Female Athlete of the Year by her peers, finished among the top five individuals in seven of 12 tournaments this season and among the top 20 in all 12 tournaments.
