CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina baseball program will be the #2 seed and face #3 seed California on Friday (May 29) at Noon (CT)/1 pm (ET) in the NCAA College Station Regional (played at Blue Bell Park), it was announced Monday on a national ESPNU telecast. The Chanticleers found out their postseason fate as the team hosted a watch party at Handley's Pub and Grub.
Texas A&M, the top seed in the four-team, double-elimination College Station Regional, will host fourth-seed Texas Southern at 6 pm (CT)/7 pm (ET) on Friday. All games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
For ticket information, fans can visit the official Texas A&M website HERE.
The Chanticleers and Bears have met on one previous occasion. Then #17 Cal defeated Coastal 17-0 during the 2011 Baseball at the Beach. Coastal has never faced Texas A&M nor Texas Southern.
Coastal Carolina will compete in the program's 13th Regional since 2001 and 14th overall, posting a 17-23 record in Regional play. Coastal has been a #1 or #2 seed on six previous occasions, including 2003 (#2 at Lincoln, Neb.); 2005 (#1 at Tempe, Ariz.); 2007 (#1 at Myrtle Beach); 2008 (#1 at Conway); 2009 (#2 at Chapel Hill, N.C.); and 2010 (#1 at Myrtle Beach). The Chants were the #3 seed in each of their last three Regionals (2011 at Clemson, 2012 at Columbia and 2013 at Blacksburg, Va.).
The Chanticleers have an RPI of 18 and a Strength of Schedule ranking of seven and are one of just eight teams to rank among the nation's top 20 in both, along with Miami, Fla. (1 & 12); UCLA (4 & 13); Florida (3 & 10); Florida State (9 & 6); Vanderbilt (10 & 11); Oklahoma State (11 & 8) and Bradley (19 & 14). Thanks to Coastal and Radford, the Big South was one of just three conferences to have the two teams among the nation's top 20 in RPI playing in their respective championship games, joining the SEC (Vanderbilt and Florida) and Missouri Valley (Missouri State and Bradley).
Coastal Carolina faced seven teams inside the current RPI top 30 - including #9 Florida State, #13 Illinois, #15 Radford, #16 College of Charleston, #26 NC State, #27 UNC Wilmington and #28 North Carolina - and had wins versus five of the squads.
The Chants were a combined 7-3 versus the nation's top two conferences - the SEC and ACC - going 1-0 versus Clemson, 1-0 versus South Carolina, 1-1 versus North Carolina, 1-0 versus NC State, 1-2 versus Florida State, 1-0 versus Georgia Tech and 1-0 versus Wake Forest.
