JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Six student-athletes from the Coastal Carolina men's and women's track and field programs competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium on Thursday, however, none met the qualifications to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Freshman thrower Chloe White got things started for the Chanticleers with a 21st-place finish in the women's javelin. She completed the event as the top freshman competitor in the field and finished six places higher than her original seeding. White turned in successive throws of 39.72 meters (130-04) and 42.76 meters (140-03) before recording a mark of 45.81 meters (150-03) on her third and final throw -- her second best of the season. She set the CCU school record and earned All-Big South honors with a throw of 47.22 meters (154-11) at the conference championships earlier this spring.
Later in the afternoon, hurdlers Christina Davis and Jessica Gelibert competed in the 400-meter hurdles, however, neither was able to finish in the top 24 and qualify for tomorrow's quarterfinals. Davis finished sixth in her heat and 41st overall after running a race of 1:00.78. Gelibert, on the other hand, fell while jumping over the fourth hurdle and was taken out of contention. She finished eighth in her heat and 46th overall with a time of 1:03.07.
"I was proud of (Gelibert) to get up and finish after a very unfortunate situation," said head coach Jeff Jacobs.
Similarly, sprinters Alexander Hass and Kahlim Denmark both competed in the 100-meter dash, but neither cracked the top 24. Hass, who entered the event as the 43rd seed, clocked a time of 10.57 seconds and finished 28th. He missed the qualifying mark by only 0.04 seconds. Denmark ran a race of 10.68 seconds and finished 38th in the event.
Lastly, to cap off the evening, Letitia Saayman competed in the 10,000-meter run but came up shy of her target time to finish among the top-12 competitors as she placed 41st in the event after running a race of 36:45.92.
The Chanticleers will return to action tomorrow beginning at 5 p.m., when Reggie Nelson will look to advance to his second consecutive NCAA Championships in the high jump, and Gelibert will look to redeem herself and advance to Saturday's quarterfinals in the 100-meter hurdles. Additionally, Desmond Wallace will run in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles at 5:30 p.m., while Hass and Therius Styles will compete in the first round of the 200-meter dash at 8:25 p.m. The top-24 times from each first-round events will qualify for Saturday's quarterfinals in hopes of advancing to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championships.
