CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team won 2-1 in its home opener against Georgia Southern on Friday to improve their record to 2-1-0. Darbie Kelley, in the 50th minute, and Daniella Famili, in the 74th minute, netted goals for the Chanticleers to secure the win.
Coastal had a couple of early attempts in the first half but was unable to find the back of the net. Throughout the first half Coastal dominated most of the possession searching for the go ahead goal.
In the first five minutes of the second half, a through ball was sent by Famili, splitting the center backs. Kelley then received the ball, one touched it past the Eagles' defender and placed it in the back of the net. It was Kelley's first goal of the season and third goal of her career.
Following Coastal's goal, the Eagles answered with a goal to tie it up in the 65th minute. After a Chanticleer foul, the Eagles had a free kick outside the 18-yard box and GSU's leading goal scorer from last season, Nora El-Shami, finished in the upper-90 to make it 1-1.
Coastal responded 10 minutes later with a goal from Famili. She received a ball sent over the top from Tara Lyons The Chanticleers controlled most of the play the remaining 15 minutes of regulation. Coastal finished the game with a total of 9 shots, Kelley and Lyons each tallied two.
Coastal continues it's at home winning streak from its previous season making it 7 for 7.
The Chanticleers will be back in action this Sunday as they head to South Carolina for the first time in Coastal's history. Game time is set for 6 pm on Sunday (Aug. 30).
