COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to the #8 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks Sunday night. Despite two second half goals from the Chants, Coastal was unable to complete the comeback attempt.
This loss dropped Coastal's record to 2-2-0 on the season. South Carolina scored in the 25th, 53rd and 62nd minutes to improve its record to 3-1-0.
After a quiet 20 minutes of the first half, South Carolina got an opportunity off of a corner kick. Gamecocks junior Kaleigh Kurtz headed one away to take the lead in the first half.
The Chants had a few very good opportunities in the first half following the Gamecock goal. Darbie Kelley had a shot from distance driving the ball to the low right corner forcing the Gamecock goalie to make a diving save. Miki Antzoulatos also had a scoring opportunity in the final minute of the first half but was blocked by a Gamecock defender.
Gamecocks scored their second goal in the 54th minute after the shot was saved by Austin but was unable to hold onto it and the Gamecocks capitalized on a defensive error.
The Chants had a chance in the first few minutes of the second half as Kelley laid the ball off to Daniella Famili but was swept up Gamecock goalie Abby Crider.
South Carolina continued to pressure Coastal's defense and put another goal in the back of the net. A cross sent to the back post was easily finished by Gamecock forward Sophie Groff, her second of the night.
Coastal answered 10 minutes later with a goal from Famili, her second on the season. Kelley had the first shot attempt but was blocked by a defender landing at Famili's feet and she blasted one in the back of the net.
Following the Chanticleer goal, Coastal gained some momentum tallying three shots on goal and four corners.
Coastal scored minutes later off a corner from Brooke Horist and Kayla Christian heads one in the back of the net making it 3-2. This was Christian's first goal of her career.
Coastal finished the night with 8 shots while South Carolina had 24. Becca Austin finished the game with 9 saves giving her 23 on the season.
The Chants will be back in action on the road this Friday Sept. 4 as they take on UAB at 7 p.m. CT.
