BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Kayla Christian dished out three goals to lead the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team to a convincing 3-1 victory over the UAB Blazers Friday night.
The Chanticleers improved to a 3-2-0 record on the season. Coastal found the net three times against the Blazers who had recorded a two-game losing streak going into the match.
Freshman Kayla Christian scored in the 14th, 53rd and 65th minutes of the game to lead the Chants to a victory. Christian leads the team in goals with four goals on the season, scoring all four in the past two games.
The last time a Chanticleer scored three goals in one game was in 2009 by Dana Gentile. Christian is now tied for second along with five other Chants.
It started with a nice play between the two Coastal forwards, Darbie Kelley and Christian. Kelley sent a through ball into Christian who broke through the UAB defense to go one on one with the goalkeeper and blasted one into the back of the net to give the Chants a 1-0 lead.
UAB answered just before the end of the half with a goal in the 40th minute to tie it up. A shot came from a cross outside the box, Becca Austin went up for the save but was unable to get hold of it. A Blazer forward was there to knock one in the back of the net.
Going into the second half, most of the play was controlled by UAB but Coastal dished out two late second half goals.
Christian's second goal came from a shot 20 yards out on the right flank. The power behind the shot made it unstoppable for UAB's keeper to hold onto and dropped it right in the goal.
After 12 minutes of play, Christian tallied her third goal of the night to secure Coastal's victory. A cross was sent into the box by Amber Adams and Christian was at the back post to knock it away.
Although UAB dominated play throughout the game, Coastal's defense was a key factor in the win over the Blazers.
The Chanticleers continue play in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday against Samford at 1 p.m. CT.
