CONWAY - Freshman Kayla Christian slotted in the game-winning goal off a beautiful pass from Amber Adams in the final minute of the first overtime to give the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team a dramatic 2-1 victory over NC State Wednesday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

Coastal improves to a 4-4-0 record on the season and notched the first win over an ACC team in the program history.

"Anytime we play an ACC school at our own place and you win, it's huge for us. It was good to come back and get the win to get our winning mentality back going into conference play," said Head Coach Paul Hogan.

The Chanticleers struck first in the 43rd minute of the game putting one in the back of the net. A free kick sent in by Jenna Surdick from 50-yards out landed right in the mix for Sam Patterson to get a head on it. Patterson flicked it just over NC States keeper to score. This was Patterson's first goal of the season and fourth of her career.

Following halftime, the NC State Wolfpack came out determined and out-shot the Chants 9-2. Becca Austin picked up five saves during the second half.

After numerous chances from the Wolfpack, the equalizer came in the 66th minute from a 25-yard shot outside the box. NC State's leading goal scorer, Jackie Stengel put the Wolfpack on the board to make it a tie game.

The remainder of the half was relatively even play on both sides before heading into overtime. Coastal had one dangerous scoring opportunity at the end when a through ball intended for Amber Adams but swept up by NC State's goalie.

Coastal battled the Wolfpack for the entire first overtime but snuck one past the NC State goalie with eight seconds remaining on the clock. Adams received the ball on the left flank and beat one to slide a ball through the Wolfpack defense finding Christian. Christian controlled the ball taking three touches to go 1v1 against NC State's goalie and slips one low to the left corner knocking it off the post for the go ahead goal. This was Christian's fifth goal of the season.

"Christian is opportunistic," Hogan said. "She's having a good year and needs to keep looking for more. Amber played her the perfect ball and she was able to put it away for the win."

The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team will head into conference play next week with the first match against Presbyterian College as they travel to Clinton, S.C. on Sept. 23. Kickoff will start at 7 p.m. You can catch the game live on the Big South Network or follow along with Gametracker.
