Coastal Drops to Samford 2-1

Sept. 6, 2015

Final Stats

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team dropped to the Samford Bulldogs 2-1 on Sunday after a late second half goal.

Coastal moved to a 3-3-0 record on the season, while Samford improved to 4-2-0.

Coastal scored early against the Samford Bulldogs in the first five minutes of the first half. Amber Adams sent a ball down the sideline to Kayla Christian who gained control of it. Christian beat her defender to send a dangerous ball to the back post where Daniella Famili was there to place it in the back of the net.

This was Famili's third goal of the season and sixth of her career. Christian continued her stellar weekend to add an assist to her records.

Samford answered just four minutes later with a goal to tie the game. Bulldogs forward Taylor Borman beat a Coastal defender to go one on one with Becca Austin and scored with a shot to the far left corner.

Coastal had a good opportunity off a free kick from Ellie Taylor just outside the 18-yard box. Taylor played the ball to the top of the box where Mikayla Williams was posted up as she takes a touch and drove one to the low left corner but just went wide.

The Bulldogs outshot Coastal in the first half but the Chants strong defense led by Austin was able to keep them from scoring. Both teams had multiple dangerous scoring opportunities throughout the first half.

Marissa Stovring recorded the Chants only shot of the second half in the 58th minute but was saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Katie Peters.

The Chants battled through the second half containing Samford until the Bulldogs struck on the 85th minute of the game for the go ahead goal.

Coastal ended the game with three shots by Taylor, Famili and Marissa Stovring each recording one. Austin finished the game with seven saves.

The Chanticleers return to action Friday Sept. 11 at Elon. Game time set for 7 p.m.
