Coastal Takes Two in Women's Tennis Doubleheader

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team made its 2016 home debut on Saturday, defeating both Francis Marion and Savannah State by 6-1 margins in a tennis doubleheader at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
The pair of wins mark Coastal's first of the season, and bumps the Chants' record to 2-1.
Coastal opened the day against the Patriots by surrendering the doubles point with losses on the first second courts. Samantha Koeliiker and Marie Krueger prevailed over Libby Scott and Laura Mary in a tight 7-6 battle on the first court, while Sofia Henning and Anilu Barrza Araiza topped Natalie Wall and Cari Berry at No. 2.
Coastal's No. 3 paring of Marie Babayan and Romane Delay won 6-3 over Eva Lieben and Anna Wintrich.
The Chants responded by sweeping all six doubles points. Wall, Delay, Babayan and Berry wrapped their respective matches in straight sets, while Scott and Mary finished off the singles round with three-set wins.
Coastal's doubles play improved against Savannah State as the Chants won on all three courts to grab the opening point.
Two of the singles matches against SSU were cut short due to injuries. Delay won by retirement on the third court while SSU's Elizabeth Geronimo won in similar fashion on the second court to give the Tigers their lone point of the match. All other singles matches were decided in straight sets in Coastal's favor.
The Chants return to action on Tuesday as they travel to UNC Wilmington to make up the match versus the Seahawks that had been postponed due to weather on Jan. 28.
