Chanticleers Sweep Sun Belt Golfers of the Week

Coastal Carolina's Alfredo Ruiz and Malene Krolboll Hansen swept the Sun Belt's initial Golfer of the Week honors for the 2016-17 season. This honor covers events played from Sept. 1 through Oct. 10, the league announced today.
Both golfers have wins in this season and both golfers have recorded five rounds of par or better.
Ruiz, a senior on the men's golf team from Atizapan, Mexico, has played five rounds this fall ââ'¬" all under par ââ'¬" and owns a 68.2 stroke average. He was runner-up in his first event of the season at The Invitational at The Ocean Course, finishing one stroke off the lead with rounds of 70-69-69 for a 54-hole score of 208. It was the first time he had ever finished a three-round event under par. Ruiz then topped that as he won his second outing, finishing co-medalist at the rain-shortened Tar Heel Intercollegiate with a score of 138 (6-under par). He shot a career-low 68 in the first round and followed that up with a 2-under 70 in the second round. The third and final round was canceled due to Hurricane Matthew.
Hansen, a junior on the women's golf team from Taastrup, Denmark, has played six rounds this fall ââ'¬" five being at par or better ââ'¬" and has a 71.0 stroke average. She won the Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 54-hole score of 207 (9-under par), a school-record. Hansen, who was in second place after days one and two, had nine birdies and shot the best round on the final day by two strokes with a 6-under par 68 to win her first tournament as a Chanticleer. She finished with rounds of 70-71-66 for her 9-under 207. Hansen is just the third Chanticleer to record three rounds at an event under par. Her 66 in the final round is the second-best, 18-hole score in school history. (Hansen owns the CCU single-round scoring record with a 65 last March.). In her second event of the season, Hansen finished in a tie for 34th. However, she was in 88th place after an opening round 77 before she rallied to shoot an even-par 72 and carded a 2-under par 70 in the final round.
The men's golf team is at East Tennessee State's annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate this weekend (Oct. 14-16). The women's program will return to action Oct. 17-18 at East Carolina's Regional Preview.
