Chants Compete At Samford Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in the Samford Invitational Saturday afternoon.

On the women's side...

Six Chanticleers ran in the women's 60 meter dash with Karissa Lunn qualifying for the finals. Lunn ran a 7.79 in the prelims round before running her best of the night in the finals with a time of 7.75 to place eight overall. Teka Simpson and Kelila Naules both ran a 7.80 which was just short of qualifying. Anacia Hines (7.81), Stephanie Pollock (8.01) and Jonnay Anthony (7.90) rounded up the race for the Chants.

Hines also competed in the 60 meter hurdles finishing the race with an 8.99 time.

Junior Aynslee van Graan took home third place in the one mile with a time of 4:51.95. Also for the Chants, Lisha Van Onselen crossed the finish line with a time of 5:10.04 placing 16th. Rounding out the times for CCU is Alesia Muklebust (5:32.77) and Taylor Creagh (5:49.97) who finished 27th and 34th, respectively.

In the womens 400 meter dash, Rozelle Meier represented CCU alone finishing with a time of 1:01.64. While in the 800 meter dash, Imani Boatwright placed ninth overall with a time of 2:15.07 while Aynslee van Graan finished 12th with a time of 2:18.23. Lisha Van Onselen crossed the finish line with a time of 2:21.84 and Regina Peattie finished with a time of 2:28.95.

Teka Simpson placed 11th in the 200 meter dash finishing with a time of 24.97. Also for Coastal, Stephanie Pollock (26.38), Jonnay Anthony (25.52), Anacia Hines (26.48) and Karissa Lunn (25.75).

For the second time this season, Kyla van Graan took home third place in the 3000 meter race with a time of 9:39.37. Rounding out the race is Rachel Byrd finishing 23rd (10:36.18), Jackie Brengel finished 24th (10:37.34) and Lisa Pieterse finished 28th (11:11.51).

In the field for the Chants, Teka Simpson finished 11th in the long jump with her best jump of the season at 5.44 meters (17-10.25). Kelsey Briggs had her best jump of the day at 4.88 meters (16-00.25).

To close out the day for Coastal, Amirah Al-Bayyinah placed third overall in the triple jump with her best jump at 12.75 meters (41-10.00). Kelila Naules finished 14th (11.19 meters 36:08.50) and Veneshia Holmes finished 16th (11.07 meters 36-04.00).

On the men's side...

Eight Chanticleers competed in the men's 60 meter dash with two advancing to the finals. Kahlim Denmark qualified with a time 6.90 and Therius Styles qualified with a time of 6.93. Denmark finished third overall with a time of 6.80 in the finals while Styles wasn't too far behind finishing sixth with a time of 6.94. D'Andre Fletcher (7.03), Marquez Moore (7.08), Ryan McCain (7.07), Desmond Wallace (7.10), Deandre Baker (7.27) and Brandon Johnson (7.08) also competed for the Chants.

In the men's 60 meter hurdles Desmond Wallace (7.94) and Dee Jennings (8.24) each qualified for the finals but both had a false start during the finals. Nick Seabright finished in the prelims with a time of 8.56. Braylon Wilkerson took home second place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.57. Following Wilkerson, Deion Wellington (50.53), Malcolm Simmons (52.57) and Gabe Gittens (53.67) all competed in the 400 meter dash.

Denmark took home another top 5 finish in the 200 meter dash finishing sixth overall with a time of 21.93. Jerome Coaxum finished 11th with a time of 22.14 while Therius Styles finished 14th with a time of 22.24 rounding out the top 20.

In the field for Coastal, Brinson Corn (15th) and Zachary Connell (16th) both had their best jump in the men's pole vault at 4.50 meters (14-09.00). Alex Botello finished 19th with his best jump at 4.20 meters (13-09.25).

Also for CCU, Deandre Baker took home ninth place in the long jump with his best jump at 6.80 meters (22-03.75) while Marquez Moore took home 12th place with his best jump at 6.65 meters (21-09.00). Brandon Johnson rounded out the long jump for Coastal with his best jump at 6.62 meters (21-08.75).

Derrick Kinloch took home sixth place in the triple jump with his best jump at 14.55 meters (47-09.00).

Closing out the day for the Chants, Brandon Richard placed fourth overall with his best jump at 2.05 meters (6-08.75).

The Chanticleer teams will return to action Saturday at the Gamecock Invitational.
