CONWAY - Sloane Kessler notched a hat trick, and Abby Godfrey scored two goals to lead Elon to a 5-4 victory over Coastal Carolina Friday afternoon at Brooks Stadium, in the Chanticleers' season opener.
Coastal Carolina gained possession and had a chance to tie the game with less than a minute remaining, but time expired before they could get off a quality shot.
With the win, Elon remains undefeated, improving to 3-0 on the season. The Chanticleers slipped to 0-1. The victory also extended a streak for Elon in the all-time series with Coastal Carolina and improved its record against the Chanticleers to 3-0.
The first half was a tightly-contested frame that included stingy defense from both sides, as the first goal didn't come until the 14th minute. Sara Nolan broke the scoreless tie with 16:10 left in the first, finding the back of the net off a feed from Maggie Carr.
Elon fired back just minutes later, as Godfrey evened the ledger with 14:16 to go before the half. Coastal Carolina scored once more in the opening frame, as Nolan gave her team a 2-1 edge with 1:48 left before halftime.
When action resumed, Carr connected with Nolan again for a score with 25:18 left in regulation, giving the Chanticleers a 3-1 advantage. Elon stormed back, as Kessler found the back of the net three times in the final 22:16. Godfrey also had a goal for Elon in the second half.
Jenna Stover set a school record for Coastal Carolina, tallying 16 saves. Elon keeper Rachel Ramirez stopped five shots. Nolan scored all four goals for the Chanticleers, and Carr tallied three assists.
Elon outpaced Coastal Carolina in shots 25-13 and ground balls 13-11.
The Chanticleers' next two games are non-conference contests on the road at Jacksonville, Fla. They take on Jacksonville on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Noon, and Niagara on Tuesday, March 1 at Noon before returning home for a game against Mercer on Friday, March 11.
