Coastal Tops Monmouth, Velickovic Named Player of the Week

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team reached five consecutive wins for the second time this season as the Chanticleers (11-2, 2-0) recorded a 6-1 victory over Monmouth on Wednesday afternoon at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex. While Wednesday's match was in progress, it was announced by the Big South that Vuk Velickovic was named the conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week, his second time this season earning the award.
Velickovic posted a combined 6-0 record at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles last week as the junior led Coastal to a trio of wins over nonconference opponents UNC Greensboro and James Madison, and Big South opponent Asheville. Two of his three singles matches were decided in three sets, while the other was a straight-sets win in a 4-0 blanking of JMU. On the top doubles court, Velickovic paired with Pedro Leme to win all three matches by at least three games.
Velickovic's hot streak continued in the win over Monmouth on Wednesday as he won his fifth consecutive singles match, and ninth consecutive doubles match with Leme. The pair is undefeated in nine matches on the top court this season.
Coastal clinched the doubles point on the second court, where Jabor Al-Mutawa and Sebastian Schneider paired to defeat Richard Chen and Alejandro Gomez Estrada by a 6-4 margin.
The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished with Monmouth's duo of Christian Vieira and Alberto Guiffrida leading Luiz Faria and Nic Planchard, 6-5.
All six of the singles matches were completed, with Coastal taking five in straight sets.
Al-Mutawa improved to 6-2 overall on the top court, while Velickovic extended his No. 2 record to 8-1. Schneider (No. 4) rebounded from a loss in his last outing, Planchard (No. 5) won his sixth straight singles match and Faria won his third singles match of the season.
Monmouth's lone point came on the third singles court, where Estrada topped Leme in three sets.
Coastal returns to its home court on Saturday to host Morgan State for an 11:30 a.m. match.
