CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team had its nine-match winning streak snapped on Thursday afternoon as the Chanticleers fell by a narrow 4-3 margin to the visiting Liberty Flames at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
The win keeps Liberty atop the Big South standings with a perfect 6-0 record, and improves the Flames' overall record to 10-8. Coastal's first conference loss of the season drops its record to 13-4, 4-1.
The Chants started the match strong, taking the opening doubles point before surrendering four of six singles matches.
"Doubles was a high point for us today," said Chanticleer coach Catherine Hewitt following the match. "Despite the loss we were able to take away a lot of good things from today to work on for the future."
Coastal's first and third pairings helped deliver the match's first point.
Libby Scott and Sara Bondar defeated Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong in a 6-3 match at No. 1, and Marie Babayan and Romane Delay followed with a 6-4 win against Panchenko and Rebekah Anderson at No. 3 to finish the point.
Both of Coastal's singles points came in straight sets as Scott topped Maria Khval at No. 1, and Bondar delivered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Mariely Hassey at No. 5.
Liberty, however, received straight-sets wins from the middle of its lineup in Anna Dollar (No. 2) Crist (No. 3) and Belen Rivera (No. 4), and saw a three-set win from Thong on the bottom court.
Coastal plays its fourth of five consecutive home matches on Saturday when the Chants leave conference play to host East Carolina for a 10 a.m. match at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
