Coastal Falls to Winthrop in Big South Semifinals

LYNCHBURG, Va. (BigSouthSports.com) - The No. 2 seed Winthrop Eagles women's tennis team ousted No. 3 Coastal Carolina in the Big South Women's Tennis Championship semifinals on Sunday with a final score of 4-0 at the Cook Tennis Center.
The Eagles advance to the Big South championship match and will face the top seeded Liberty Lady Flames at the Cook Tennis Center with the first serve scheduled for 12:00pm.
With the victory, Winthrop improves to 19-5 overall this season, while the Chanticleers fall to 18-7 to conclude their season.
The Eagles claimed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. On court two, Winthrop's Megan Kaufman and Caitlin Cridland shutout Coastal's Romane Delay and Carry Beri, 6-0. Libby Scott and Sara Bondar evened the match, defeating Lauren Proctor and Mariana Humberg (6-2) on court one. With all eyes on court three, Winthrop seniors Alice Garcia and Tijana Uzelac edged Chanticleers Natalie Wall and Laura Mary (6-3) to put the Eagles on the board.
In singles, Kaufmann wrapped up her match first for Winthrop, winning in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) over Coastal's Laura Mary.
Alice Garcia's victory over Romane Delay notched the third point for the Eagles as she won on court two (7-5, 6-3).
2016 Big South Freshman and Player of the Year Lauren Proctor was the last to finish in Sunday's match for Winthrop. She bested Coastal Carolina senior Libby Scott (6-3, 7-6 (8-6)) on court one. Proctor and Scott held the top two singles records on court one in the Big South respectively this year.
With today's win, Winthrop will make their 21st Big South Women's Tennis Championship appearance. The Eagles have won seven of the last eight Big South titles, including seven consecutive championships from 2008-2014.
