WEIRTON, W. Va. - Thadd Obecny II, a rising junior for Coastal Carolina men's golf team, carded a 7-under par 135 to finish second at the Sectional Qualifier and earn a berth to the 116th US Amateur, played August 15-21 at historic Oakland Hills country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich. -- a suburb of Detroit.
Obecny and medalist Garrett Rank were the two players to advance from the Weirton (W.Va.) Sectional, one of 83 Sectionals played across the country to produce this year's US Amateur field. Playing at the par 71 Williams Country Club, Obecny carded a 4-under par 67 in the first round while posting a 3-under 68 in round two.
In the first round, Obecny birdied three of his first six holes and made the turn at 3-under. He opened his back nine with birdies on holes three and five before suffering his lone bogey of the day on his final hole, the par 4 9th.
Obecny reeled off six birdies in round two, with three bogeys and nine pars, to record a 3-under 68 for the day.
