CONWAY - Coastal Carolina alumna Amber Campbell will compete in the women's hammer throw at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, Aug. 12. The event starts at 7:40 p.m. ET with Group A, followed by Group B at 9:10 p.m. ET with the top 12 throwers advancing to Monday's (Aug. 15) final at 9:40 a.m. ET.
Campbell, who will be the 13th competitor of 16 in Group B, was victorious at the United States Olympic Trials with a mark of 74.03 meters in the hammer throw in June to qualify the Olympic Games. She is the ninth overall seed on the 2016 Olympic qualifying list.
It is the third trip to the Olympic Games for Campbell, who also competed in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. She placed 21st in the hammer throw in 2008 and 13th in 2012 with a mark of 69.93m, the highest for a U.S. female hammer thrower.
Campbell was a five-time NCAA All-American and 16-time Big South Champion during her four years at Coastal. She was named the Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Year each of her final three years, and in 2002-03 was honored as the conference's Female Athlete of the Year. Campbell is also a member of the Coastal Carolina and Big South Hall of Fame.
