CONWAY - After opening the year with three straight wins the Coastal Carolina (3-1) women's lacrosse team dropped its first match of the year to Big East foe Vanderbilt (3-2).
The Commodores got on the board with an unassisted goal by Emily Mathewson. The Chants responded at the 23:05 mark to tie it at one on Haley Alexander's eighth goal of the season, and took a one goal lead 23 seconds later on Courtney Genovese's sixth goal to lead 2-1.
Vanderbilt tied it at 2-2 on Avery Hoelting's goal and retook the lead at 19:02 when Julie Blaze found the back of the net.
Sophie Crowther tied it at 3-3, on her first of two goals on the day, with 8:25 left in the first half before the Commodores took a 2-goal lead.
CCU pulled back within one on the Chants final goal of the first half when Keri White (2 assists) found Madeline Bromley in front of the net for her only goal of the day. Vanderbilt scored with 17 seconds left in the half for the 6-4 advantage.
The second half opened with the Commodores getting a goal at 27:28 by Blaze to lead 7-4.
The defenses took control with neither team getting a firm grip until after the Alexander scored on a free position shot at 12:35 mark to make it 7-5.
Vanderbilt then scored four straight before Coastal answered on goals by Crowther (5:59) and Alexander (3:18).
Harley Barrett earned her second straight start of the season, finished with 12 saves, dropped to 2-1.
The Chanticleers return to action at Brooks Stadium on Wednesday, Mar. 15, at 3:00 p.m., to take on the Louisville Cardinals of the ACC.
