CONWAY - Coastal Carolina's softball team won the opening game of the Coastal Carolina Invitational with an 8-0 victory over North Dakota Friday.
Taylor Rahach nearly pitched a perfect game, allowing just a single hit, while striking out 10 Fighting Hawks and letting her defense take care of the rest.
The Chanticleers took a one run lead in the bottom of the first on back-to-back singles from Taty Forbes and Alexis Alvino. Amanda Daneker's slow roller allowed Forbes to score.
The second inning saw Coastal get three runs on zero hits and a North Dakota error. Kassidy Smith led off by getting hit by a pitch and was lifted for pitch runner Michaela McAuley. Mackenzie Budinger reached on an error before Adriana Toro moved up both McAuley and Budinger on a sacrifice bunt. A Fighting Hawk wild pitch allowed the first run of the inning score and moved Budinger over to third. Angela Buccilli walked to load the bases. Lauren Fedorchak came on to pinch run for Budinger and scored when Forbes reached on a fielder's choice. Buccilli moved to third on a ground out by Alvino and then scored the last run of the inning on another North Dakota wild pitch.
Four runs came across the plate in the third for the Chants to close out the scoring for the game. Timi Tooley led off the inning with a walk and advanced on a one out double by Smith. The third wild pitch of the game allowed Tooley to score. Smith later scored on Toro's single to left. The final two runs for CCU came on a Buccilli sacrifice fly and a Forbes RBI single up the middle to provide the eventual 8-0 final.
Coastal is back in action on Saturday, in a doubleheader. The Chants will take on North Dakota at 3:30 pm followed by a 5:30 contest against UCONN.
