No. 18 Coastal Carolina Cruises Past Albany, 14-0

Box Score March 4, 2017

Final Stats

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina completed a mixed doubleheader sweep with a 14-0, seven-inning win over Albany Saturday night as part of the Tidelands Health Classic at Springs Brooks Stadium. The teams mutually decided to stop the game after seven innings.

The 18th-ranked Chanticleer defeated Winthrop, 8-3, earlier in the day and improved to 8-5 on the season. Albany, which walked 11 and hit Chanticleers four times, falls to 3-3. Coastal will close the Tidelands Health Classic by hosting San Francisco at noon on Sunday.

Coastal only needed eight hits in the win, two being home runs. Billy Cooke hit a leadoff dinger and Wood Myers sealed the game with a grand slam in the sixth. Coastal scored six runs by either drawing a walk or being hit by a pitch.

With all the excitement Coastal's offense was creating, CCU pitcher Jason Bilous (1-0) was quietly turning in his career-best performance. The sophomore was credited with his first career shutout and complete game while allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts.

Cooke gave Coastal a 1-0 lead in the first with a leadoff home run. It was the first time a Chanticleer hit a leadoff home run since Connor Owings accomplished the feat at Radford on April 13, 2014. (As part of that effort at Radford, Owings reached base on eight consecutive at bats -- including seven hits and a hit by pitch -- over two days.)

Coastal added two runs in the third. With bases loaded, Kevin Woodall Jr., walked to force home Jordan Gore and Seth Lancaster was hit by a pitch to force home Cameron Pearcey.

In the fifth, Coastal sent 12 men to the plate and scored six runs thanks largely to five walks and two hit by pitches. Lancaster, who walked twice in the inning, started things with a free pass. Dalton Ewing was hit by a pitch. Pinch hitter Peyton Isaacson came off the bench to deliver an RBI single through the right side of the infield. A walk to pinch hitter Rafi Vazquez loaded the bases for Gore, who lined an RBI single to right field. Pearcey was hit by a pitch to force in a third run before Cooke drew a four-pitch walk to bring in the fourth run of the inning. Myers followed with a walk force home another run. Woodall's sac fly gave Coastal its sixth run of the frame and ninth of the game.

Coastal used another bases-loaded walk and a grand slam to take a 14-0 lead in the sixth. With bases loaded, pinch hitter Josh Crump walked to force in a run. Then Myers hit a grand slam to right field.

Bilous caught a pop out and struck out two in the seventh to end the contest.
