Tyler Named A Burlsworth Trophy Nominee

Coastal Carolina junior Ky’Jon Tyler is one of 69 players nominated for the national award
Fayetteville, Ark. – Junior wide receiver Ky'Jon Tyler was one of 69 players nominated from NCAA Division I (FBS) schools across the nation for the 2018 Burlsworth Trophy, it was announced today by the Burlsworth Trophy in conjunction with the Springdale (AR) Rotary Club.
The award is given to the most outstanding football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.
Tyler, who came to Coastal Carolina in 2015 as a walk-on, redshirted his freshman season in which he was named the Chant Squad Offensive Player of the Year and has been a key factor on the field for the Chants ever since.
This season, Tyler leads the Chanticleers in kick returns (10), kick return yards (205), punt returns (4) and punt return yards (30). He is also second on the team in receptions with 17 catches and in receiving yards with 285 on the year, an average of 16.8 yards per catch.
He has totaled three touchdowns on the year, two receiving and one rushing, which includes an 81-yard touchdown pass from Kilton Anderson in the win over Campbell that is tied for the 16th-longest touchdown scoring play in CCU history.
The Burlsworth Trophy, which is in its ninth year, is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas walk-on and all-American offensive lineman. Burlsworth's life is also the subject of a major motion picture, "Greater", which was released in 2016.
Recent winners include quarterback Luke Falk from Washington State University last year. A three-year starter who broke the PAC-12 record for career passing yards during his senior season, Falk is now a member of the Miami Dolphins. The 2015 and 2016 winner was Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield who was the first pick in the 2018 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns out of Oklahoma University.
