Men’s Golf Signs Four to NLIs

Coastal Carolina’s 2019 signing class includes three in-state student-athletes
Conway, S.C. – Coastal Carolina head men's golf coach Jim Garren and the men's golf program are excited to announce the signing of four student-athletes in Garrett Cooper (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee), Gavin Noble (Ringgold, Ga./Ringgold), Holden Grigg (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) and Seth Taylor (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) to National Letters of Intent to continue both their academic and athletic careers at Coastal Carolina University beginning in the fall of 2019.
"It's an exciting day for Coastal Carolina men's golf. We are extremely happy to have Garrett, Gavin, Holden, and Seth joining our program," stated coach Garren. "They are all very talented players and come from great families."
"This class is a major part in the future success of our program. We've been waiting for today for a long time now," Garren continued. "I was hired here on July 20, 2017, and we have been working on this class since July 20, 2017. We said last year on signing day that our goal was to keep the top players in South Carolina at home and attract the top talent from around the country to come here. This class is a perfect example of that. Garrett, Holden, and Seth have been at the top of the 2019 class in South Carolina for a couple years now and we are glad they wanted to come home to Coastal. Gavin has proven himself as one of the top junior golfers in the world and we are glad he chose to come home to Coastal."
Garrett Cooper – Golfweek Class of 2019 Ranking No. 123 / Junior Golf Scoreboard Class of 2019 Ranking No. 290
Cooper joins the Chanticleers from Cowpens, S.C., and Chesnee High School. Ranked as the No. 8 player in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association (SCJGA) rankings, Cooper is a two-time all-state and all-county performer. He is also a four-time all-region selection and a three-time all-area honoree. Over 2018, Cooper turned in six top-10 individual finishes, including a runner-up finish at the 18th annual Blade Junior Classic in July. He also posted a second-place finish in the 22nd annual Players Championship hosted by the Dustin Johnson Foundation in Nov. 2017.
"Garrett is a very good driver of the golf ball and hits a lot of fairways, and that translates really well to the college level. He's a big kid and he's grown a lot over the last year. He has unlimited potential and is the kind of guy you are going to see get better every single year. He has a lot of golf smarts and a good understanding of his game. We are looking forward to getting him on campus next fall."
Gavin Noble – Golfweek Class of 2019 Ranking No. 21 / Junior Golf Scoreboard Class of 2019 Ranking No. 35
Noble will come to Coastal Carolina from Ringgold High School in Ringgold, Ga. Ranked as high as No. 3 in the state of Georgia, Noble played well in a number junior golf majors and big events this past summer including the AJGA's Polo Junior Classic, the Junior Players Championship, the Ping Invitational, and the Rolex Tournaments Champions. A winner of 11 world and international tournaments during his junior career, including the 2016 AJGA Windham All-Star Champions event, Noble most recently finished at the runner-up at both the 2018 Southern Junior AM and the 2018 AJGA Vaughn Taylor events. He also took third-place honors at the 2018 AJGA Rome Classic. As a young child, Noble was featured at No. 6 on ESPN's Top Plays of the Week when he was just two years old.
"Gavin is a big-time talent and he has proven himself against the top level of Junior Golf. He has a lot of speed and power and is a good wedge player as well. That's a nice combination when you're looking at the transition to collegiate golf. He has won a lot of golf tournaments in his life and is the kind of guy who truly enjoys the competition. We are really excited about having Gavin join us at Coastal."
Holden Grigg – Golfweek Class of 2019 Ranking No. 76 / Junior Golf Scoreboard Class of 2019 Ranking No. 252
A local product from Myrtle Beach High School, Grigg will stay at home to play for Coastal. Currently ranked No. 5 overall in the SCJGA Heritage rankings and No. 3 in the SCJGA 2019 class, Grigg most recently recorded a runner-up finish at the 2018 North-South Junior event played at Pinehurst #2 and #5 with rounds of 68, 74 and 72. In 2017, he won the Carolinas Junior PGA event held at The Hackler Course, the AJGA tournament at The Legends Course in St. Louis, and the Anderson Bank tournament at the Country Club of South Carolina. He also took first-place individual medalist honors at the 2017 South Carolina High School State Championships, shooting back-to-back rounds of 65 for a South Carolina High School state championship tournament record and Barony Course with a two-round score of 130.
"Holden drives the ball really straight and putts the ball extremely well. He's one of the better putters I've seen at the Junior Golf level in a while and that's exciting. He's also grown a lot over the last year so I think he is just scratching the surface in terms of his physical skills. Holden has won on the national level which is very promising and should help him be comfortable and confident when he gets on campus next fall. Our team is really happy to have him staying close to home and be a part of our family."
Seth Taylor – Golfweek Class of 2019 Ranking No. 71 / Junior Golf Scoreboard Class of 2019 Ranking No. 154
Another South Carolinian, Taylor joins the CCU family from Gaffney High School in Gaffney, S.C. A four-time all-region team selection and a two-time all-state honoree, Taylor was a member of the 2018 Can-Am team and a two-time South Carolina team member in the 2016 and 2017 South Carolina vs. Georgia matches. Ranked as high as No. 8 SCJGA Heritage rankings, Taylor posted a runner-up finish at the 2018 South Carolina 5A State Championship tournament last season and also won the 2018 Henry Transou Memorial Junior Championship event with a 36-hole score of 135. He placed in a tie for third overall at the 2018 Grant Bennett Florence Junior Invitational and the 16th annual Blade Junior Classic. He also registered a fourth-place finish at the 2018 SCJA Junior Championships and finished tied for fourth overall at the 21st Annual Players Championship and the 2016 Beth Daniel Junior Azalea events.
"Seth has all the tools and that has shown over his career with multiple wins and a lot of low scores. He can shoot low numbers when he gets it going and as a coach that is very exciting to see. He has speed and overall he's a good driver of the ball. He has a really high ceiling and his potential is off the charts. He's going to be a lot of fun to coach"
A lot of hard work went into this group and I can't thank my assistant coach Jeremy Alcorn enough for his hard work with this group. We also want to thank these guys and their parents for believing in us, believing in our program, and believing in Coastal. Our goal here is simple: we want to win Championships and we believe these guys can help us continue on with that tradition. They are now a part of our family with Coastal men's golf," Garren stated.
