Yazeed Matthews and
Tsiki Ntsabeleng each scored a pair of goals to send Coastal Carolina past Georgia Southern 4-1 in Sun Belt Conference men's soccer action.
Matthews came into the match scoring a goal in six consecutive matches, which tied him with two others for the longest streak in the nation this season. He now is by himself having scored a goal in his seventh consecutive match. It is also the fourth consecutive match Matthews has scored two goals.
After a scoreless first half Matthews was able to get the Chants on the board in the 49
th minute on a cross from
Paul Odendahl for the lead.
The score stayed that way for 24 minutes before Ntsabeleng scored back-to-back goals over a 60 second span to put CCU up 3-0. Ntsabeleng's first goal came at the 72:45 mark on a nice assist into the box from
Ryan Willoughby. Ntsaleleng's second goal came with 73:45 on the clock and the assist came from
Saif AlHameli.
After an Alkair Cortes score for Georgia Southern came in the 76
th minute to cut CCU's lead to 3-1, Matthews put the finishing touch on Senior Night with his second goal with less than 10 minutes left in the match. This goal was assisted by Ntsabeleng who finished the night with five points.
Matthews current run includes 11 goals during the seven matches and has now pushed his total to 13 goals. He is tied for the conference lead in points with 29 also adding three assists to his point total.
CCU came out and was clearly the aggressor in tonight's action. Even though neither team scored in the opening 45 minutes, the Chants outshot the Eagles 7-1 and 3-0 in shots on goal.
CCU finished the night with 16 total shots to only three for Georgia Southern. Eight of CCU's shots were on goal while only two were on goal for the visitors.
Chris Dattalo picked up the win in goal, playing just over 81 minutes.
Before the match seven CCU Seniors were honored led by Matthews. The other seniors were Kervin Kenton Fadel,
Henrik Mueller,
Jaiden Fortune,
Jorge Calix, Sailf AlHameli and
Ryan Willoughby.
Tonight's match was the final regular season match of the season with the Chants heading into the Sun Belt Conference 9-5 overall and 2-2 in conference action. Georgia Southern had a chance to win the regular season title with a win in tonight's action, but will now enter the tournament as the two seed.
There is one more conference match tomorrow and the Sun Belt will release the brackets over the weekend for the tourney that will be hosted by Georgia State in Atlanta. The dates for the tournament are November 8, 9 and 11
th.
