CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team won its fourth straight match Friday evening as the Chanticleers took down Georgia Southern in four sets (25-21, 17-25, 32-30, 25-18) at the HTC Center.
After splitting the first two sets, Coastal (10-11, 9-4 SBC) won a pivotal third set that went well into extra points. From there, the Chants finished the match strong with a seven-point set victory over the Eagles (8-20, 2-11 SBC) in the fourth.
Anett Nemeth recorded her third triple-double of the season with a 10 kill, 17 assist, 20 dig performance. She is the first Chant to have a trio of triple-doubles in one season during the 25-point rally scoring era.
Leading Friday's match in kills was
Ani Bozdeva, who landed a season-high 18 swings while hitting .250. Bozdeva added 12 digs to record her second double-double this season.
Bozdeva and Nemeth were two of four Chants to reach double digits in digs.
Sydney Alvis led the Chants with 26, and
Kyla Manning tallied 13. Coastal totaled 92 digs as a team, the most for CCU in a four-set match this season.
Coastal also finished the match with a season high of 16 blocks. Six Chants had multiple blocks, including six by
Dora Lulic, three each by Nemeth,
Kaylah House,
Christina Nance and
Reka Orsi Toth, and two by Manning.
The focal point of the match occurred late in the third set with the match tied 1-1. After halting a 7-1 Georgia Southern run that gave the Eagles an 18-16 advantage, the Chants managed to tie the set five times, including a 23-23 deadlock late in the game.
Georgia Southern claimed the next point, resulting in the first of five set-points that Coastal fought off. The Eagles also held leads of 25-24, 26-25, 27-26 and 30-29.
Bozdeva landed a pair of kills that put the Chants in front, 31-30, and a Georgia Southern attack error gave the deciding point and a 2-1 match lead to Coastal.
Coastal won the fourth and final set by its largest margin of the evening thanks to Bovdeva landing six kills and the Chanticleer defense coming up with 23 kills and a trio of blocks.
Coastal returns to the HTC Center on Sunday to host Georgia State for its final home match of the 2018 season. Following the match, Coastal will recognize the four members of its senior class:
Sara Boothe,
Sydney Alvis,
Dora Lulic and
Shelby Ladewig.
The team will not hold a post-match clinic on Sunday, but will hold a team signing event after the senior day recognition.
