Coastal Sweeps Georgia State on Senior Day

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team finished off its 2018 regular season home schedule with a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-22, 25-12) of Georgia State on Sunday at the HTC Center. It was the final home match at the HTC Center for the four members of the Coastal senior class, Sydney Alvis, Sara Boothe, Dora Lulic and Shelby Ladewig.

Coastal improves to 11-11 overall and 10-4 in Sun Belt matches with the victory on Sunday, while Georgia State falls to 6-18 overall, and 3-10 in the Sun Belt.

It was another dominant performance for the Chants as they recorded their fifth sweep of the season, and second against the Panthers. The Chants also extended their current winning streak to five matches.

Coastal's .316 hitting percentage was its second-highest of the season, and the Chants held sizeable advantages in kills (45-25), assists (45-22), digs (43-32) and blocks (7-5).

Anett Nemeth led the match with 13 kills, followed closely by Kyla Manning's 12 kills at a .391 pace. Ann-Katrine Hakansson also recorded a match high with 31 assists, and Sydney Alvis led the Chants with 15 digs.

All Panthers players were held to single digits in kills, and Georgia State was limited to hitting .052 for the match.

With the opening set tied at 9-9, Coastal created some breathing room by winning the next four points and forcing GSU into an early timeout. The Chants remained in front by at least three points for the remainder of the set as they took a 1-0 match lead. Manning put down six of her kills in the first frame, while Alvis impressed defensively with eight digs.

The second set was the closest of the match with 12 ties and five lead changes. Georgia State won three straight points late in the set to take a 22-20 lead and force Coastal to use a timeout. The break halted the Panthers' momentum, and the Chants won the next five straight points to take set. A kill by Nemeth started the final run, and her and Kaylah House factored into a block on the following point. The set ended on three straight Georgia State hitting errors.

The third set was all Coastal as the Chants hit .455 while limiting GSU to -.192. Coastal led the frame from start to finish, and used a massive 13-1 run to take a comfortable 22-8 lead.

The Chants have two regular season matches remaining before the start of the 2019 Sun Belt Championship. Coastal finishes off its schedule this weekend with a trip to Alabama as the Chants take on South Alabama (Nov. 9) and Troy (Nov. 10).
