Biscardi Tabbed a Lou Groza Semifinalist

CCU freshman place kicker Massimo Biscardi has made 11 field goals this season
West Palm Beach, Fla. – Coastal Carolina football freshman kicker Massimo Biscardi was named a top 20 semifinalist for the Lou Groza National Collegiate Place Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recently announced. The award is presented annually to college football's top place kicker.
In his first season as a Chant, Biscardi has made 11-of-14 field goal attempts and has gone 26-of-29 in point after attempts. He has scored at least one point in all nine games for CCU this season and leads the team with 59 points on the year. He ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference and 32nd nationally with a 78.6 field goal percentage on the season.
Biscardi, who burst on the scene with three made field goals in the season opener at South Carolina on Sept. 1, became the first true freshman kicker to make three field goals in the same game in his debut as a Chant. He has made three field goals in a single game twice this season, at South Carolina and again at Georgia State.
The Downingtown, Pa. native set a new CCU record by making the first eight field goal attempts of his career, surpassing the previous record of five-straight field goals to start a career by Ryan Granger, and made good on a career-long 50-yard field goal attempt in the road win at Louisiana on Sept. 22.
Semifinalists will be voted on by a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists and current NFL kickers to select the three finalists. These finalists will be announced on Nov. 20 and honored at the 27th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicker Awards Banquet on Dec. 3 in Palm Beach County. The same panel then selects the winner, who will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 6.
The award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an all-pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
Since the first Lou Groza Award was handed out in 1992, 26 finalists, including 14 winners, have gone on to appear in the NFL, earning 10 trips to the Pro Bowl and taking home seven Super Bowls. That list includes 2018 NFL kickers Dan Bailey, Randy Bullock, Daniel Carlson, Mason Crosby, Jake Elliott, Ka'imi Fairbairn, Graham Gano, Zane Gonzalez, Dustin Hopkins, Sebastian Janikowski, Mike Nugent, Cairo Santos, and Caleb Sturgis.
