STATESBORO, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team finished its 2018 fall schedule this past weekend at the Georgia Southern Championships. Highlighting the weekend was a doubles championship win for
Luiz Faria and
Pyry Hyrkkonen. Faria also performed well in singles, reaching the semifinals of his singles flight.
The event drew players from Georgia Southern, College of Charleston, North Florida, USC Upstate and Florida Tech.
A Singles Main
Participating in the A Singles Flight for Coastal was
Daiki Tanabe,
Gonzalo Achondo,
Joel Popov,
Luiz Faria and
Pyry Hyrkkonen.
Achondo and Faria both advanced out of the opening round, with former defeating Nilo Duarte of UNF in three sets, and the latter downing Andre Limon of College of Charleston in two.
Achondo fell in the following round to Georgia Southern's Stefano Di Aloy, while Faria advanced to the semifinals with a three-set win over Georgia Southern's Diego Finkelstein.
Faria's run ended with a straight-sets loss to Antonio Muniz of Georgia Southern.
A Singles Consolation
Tanabe, Popov and Hyrkkonen all advanced out of the opening round of the consolation bracket. Tanabe and Popov faced each other in the second round, with Popov coming away victorious in three sets. Hyrkkonen fell in the second round to Limon.
Popov and Limon both advanced to the final of this bracket, and the Chanticleer won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
B Singles Main
Participating for Coastal were
Juan Castellanos and
Francesco Cori. Both advanced past the first round by virtue of straight-sets wins, but fell in the second round.
A Doubles Draw
The Coastal pairings in the doubles draw consisted of Castellanos/Cori, Achondo/Tanabe and Faria/Hyrkkonen.
Only Faria/Hyrkkonen advanced past the opening round after defeating Georgia Southern's Garcia/Streda, 6-3. The duo then beat Bernardes/Eble of USC Upstate and Di Aloy/McCullough of Georgia Southern to advance to the championship match. There, the Coastal pairing prevailed 6-2 over Finkelstein/Muniz of Georgia Southern.
