Hamilton Lifts Coastal Past UNCG in Overtime

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Naheria Hamilton scored seven of her 17 total points in overtime to push Coastal Carolina to a 78-71 victory over UNCG in extra minutes at Fleming Gym. The junior center also hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, and nearly completed the triple-double as she set a career high with nine blocks.

Coastal closes its non-conference schedule with an 8-3 record, while UNCG falls to 6-8 with the overtime loss.

Saturday's game was tied a total of 10 times, including at the end of the first, second and fourth quarters. Coastal held the largest lead of the day with a 10-point cushion in both the first quarter and overtime.

Four Chants scored in double figures. Only DJ Williams surpassed Hamilton with 19 points. Breelyn Blanding had 16 points, and Roche 15. Blanding narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds, and Janae Camp hauled in 10 boards.

UNCG's Nadine Soliman led all players with 22 points. Aja Boyd (17) and Mangela Ngandjui (15) rounded out the Spartans with double-digit points.

Coastal took a large lead early thanks to a stretch of 14 unanswered points midway through the opening quarter. Roche scored eight of her points in that time on a reverse layup and a pair of 3-pointers.

UNCG responded with a 10-2 run of its own over the final two minutes of the first quarter, resulting in a 19-19 tie at the end of one. The Spartans also scored nine of the first 11 points to start the second quarter, giving UNCG its largest lead of the half at seven points.

Coastal continually chipped away at UNCG's lead over the final five minutes of the first half, and briefly reclaimed the lead after a run of nine straight points. Williams scored seven the Chants' points during that streak, including a 3-pointer to cap the run and put Coastal in front, 34-32. The second quarter ended the same as the first, however, as Soliman scored her 13th point of the half with 35 seconds remaining to even the score once more.

Coastal led by three points at the end of the third quarter after scoring seven unanswered during the final minutes of the frame. That lead was erased early in the fourth after Soliman hit a 3-pointer to open the quarter. The score was tied four times throughout the fourth quarter, including at the buzzer to end regulation, and neither team led by more than three points during that time.

The Chants entered the extra period in the bonus and made the most of it, scoring seven of their 16 OT points at the free-throw line. Coastal allowed UNCG just one basket during the first four-and-a-half minutes of overtime.

For the fourth time this season the Chants had 50 or more rebounds as they hauled in an even 50.

Coastal begins its Sun Belt Conference schedule on Thursday when the Chants welcome Troy to the HTC Center for a 6 p.m. game. Coastal has won all six of its home games this year, and each of its last nine games at the HTC Center.
