
Track and Field Announces Team Captains for 2019 Season

nCONWAY - Six Coastal Carolina track and field student-athletes were selected by the team on Thursday to serve as team captains for the 2019 season, announced by Director of Track and Field, Sandy Fowler. Kahlim Denmark, Erik Eckleben, Nadeel Wildschutt, Kelsey Briggs, Sammy Jo Layko, and Anacia Hines will lead the Chanticleers this season.
Redshirt senior Kahlim Denmark returns in 2019 for his fifth season of sprinting action. In his time at CCU, Denmark has two records to his credit. Just last season, Demark was able to break the 11 year old 200 meter record with a time of 20.92, eclipsing the mark set by Aubrey Lemon in 2007 (21.18). As a freshman in 2015, the native from Hanahan, South Carolina, was the third leg of the 4x 200 relay team who ran 1:24.34, which bested 1:25.84 that was set in 2014.
Eckleben goes into the 2019 season currently sitting number two on the all-time list in the long jump at Coastal. The redshirt junior achieved that mark in 2018 when he jumped 7.49 meters at the NCAA East Preliminaries in Tampa, Florida.
Wildschutt starts his first year on the track and field squad. The sophomore has competed on the cross-country team the past two seasons and has won runner of the year two times in the Sun Belt, Sun Belt freshman of the year, winning eight events and earning a spot in the 2017 NCAA Championships when placed fourth in East Regional held in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Hines goes into the track and field season ranked in the top-10 all-time in three different categories. The senior broke into all-time record book a season ago when she became the eighth fastest woman in CCU history in the 100 meters with a time of 11.86 at the Sun Belt Championships at Texas State University. In the 110 meter hurdles at the USC Open, Hines finished with time of 11.73 which is fourth best all-time in school history. Hines also was a member of the 2018 Sun Belt Championship winning 4x100 team that finished with a mark of 45.24, fifth best all-time.
Layko is holder of two top-10 records at CCU. The senior currently sits 10th all-time in the weight throw as she has reached the mark of 16.00 meters last February at the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships. In 2016, Layko threw the fifth longest mark in Chanticleer history in the hammer throw completion with a distance of 55.29 at the Big South Outdoor Championships in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Briggs broke into the top three in Coastal history in the long jump when she leaped (5.83 meters) to a first place finish at the East Tennessee State Indoor Invitational in 2018. The senior from Blythewood, South Carolina also earned one other first place finish in the long jump, coming in 2016 at the Big South Triangular (Outdoor) meet held in High Point, North Carolina. Briggs in her career between the 60 meters, 100 meters, and long jump has a 17 top-10 finishes.
The 2019 track and field season will get started with an indoor meet in Columbia on January 18-19 at the Gamecock Inaugural.
